Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a VERY nice 1971 MG MGB. The following description was provided by the owner. The current mileage is ONLY 57,974. Total restoration completed on 5/17/95 at 45,046 miles consisting.. ENGINE - bored .020 over, crankshaft turned .010/.010, new pistons, camshaft, timing chain, bearings, oil pump, heads rebuilt for no lead, new motor mounts, carburetors rebuilt to new, new water pump, alternator and starter rebuilt, new high performance radiator core, new clutch and pressure plate, clutch master cylinder and clutch cylinder rebuilt, new stainless steel exhaust. SUSPENSION - all hydraulic shocks either replaced or rebuilt. FUEL SYSTEM - new gas tank, new electric fuel pump, all fuel lines cleaned and inspected. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - wiring harness removed from car and every connection cleaned, shined, and copper paste applied to joint. New horns were installed. INTERIOR - everything was stripped out to bare metal, including the dash, seats, doors, steering wheel, etc., seat cushions replaced, along with original color, autumn leaf interior. Aluminum backed foam padding was installed from firewall back and then carpeting installed. Most switches and knobs were replaced and gauges were removed and cleaned, also replaced were the ash tray and interior light fixture, the dash was topped with a new dash overlay.New original equipment Tickford convertible top with zip out back window, new tonneau cover bars were purchased and original tonneau cover was restored, new windshield, new rearview mirror, new in 2010, Kenwood mp3 format stereo with usb port, Pioneer door bass/midrange speakers, dash mounted tweeters. BODY - when restoration began, it was discovered that the car had been wrecked and that the door sills under the drivers door looked like an accordion. A cheap fix had masked most of the damage with a new front fender with 1-2” of bondo on the front to line everything up. A new door skin had been mounted poorly on the drivers door. Everything came off or out, including complete powertrain, suspension, steering, wiring, etc. etc.. Then came the drivers fender, inner fender, hood, radiator support and all sheet metal in front of and under the radiator, drivers frame rail from under driver forward, drivers floor board, drivers door sill and cover, and drivers door skin removed, front and rear valance. A new frame (front sidemember LH) was meticulously installed, with the help of a factory dealer shop manual. All sheet metal was stripped to bare metal with 3M abrasive wheels as was all removed components and primered or repainted with Eastwood correct paints. New sheet metal panels and components were welded in with a mig wirefeed welder as was the repositioned drivers door skin. Both doors windows were rebuilt with new glass channel liners and cranks. A new hood was installed. New sheet metal pieces are too numerous to list. Both driver and passenger rocker panels were sprayed with an Eastwood kit that coated the inside of it. All panels, existing and new were undersealed. Paint was original style and color, (teal blue) enamel and several coats were applied and everything was wet sanded and buffed smooth. Both front and rear bumpers are new as are most of the chrome/stainless steel pieces on the car, including both fender mounted rear view mirrors, as are most plaques and emblems and pieces of the front grill. The rostyle wheels were stripped, repainted, centers and lug nuts replaced and new stainless trim rings installed. Anything that was supposed to shine was either replaced or polished to a high shine. No rust was found on the entire car. TRUNK - spare tire apparently is original. Rim was stripped and painted back original paint. New black carpet was installed along with spare tire cover. New luggage carrier installed on trunk lid. At the time of this restoration, I owned a sod farm and over the period of one winter, this car was restored by myself and a certified GM mechanic in my employ. This car was restored with love and attention to detail, with absolutely no shortcuts. It is straight and drives true. It is a happy car and demands attention wherever it goes. In my search for information about this car I uncovered that it was made in August 1970 and the engine was made in the last month of the “high performance” engine. All engines after this went to a longer stroke to assist with coming emission legislation. This was the last of the “100 mph Bs”. This engine has the smog pump that it came with. I restored all the attached plumbing and should pass any emissions test. I need to replace this car that sits in my garage under cover too much, with a car that I can drive everyday, rain or shine. My loss is your gain. All owners/shop manuals, left over parts, and car cover goes with the car. Tires are Michelin Radial P185-75R14 with VERY little wear. Car does have some minor rock chips around the doors (see pic) and a few minor chips in the paint. Overall, this MGB presents very well and would make an excellent weekend cruiser or cruise-in participant. Would also make an excellent Rally car.
