Vehicle Detail

I offer for auction my 1972 Mercedes Benz 220D with automatic transmission. Vehicle identification number is 11511012210339. I purchased this vehicle from the second owner in November 2008. The odometer reads 68,656 although I’m certain its mileage is actually 168,656 as I reported on the title. I had big plans to return this car to regular service, but other commitments keep pushing this project to the side. I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking, but I believe the vehicle to be in excellent condition and it is certainly drivable in its current condition, although some work will be necessary to make it dependable as a daily driver. The paint is in excellent condition and the front end has been repainted at some point as reported by the previous owner, although I could hardly tell. The front passenger fender seems to be slightly misaligned with the door- although hardly noticeable it does appear to indicate the possibility of a minor collision at some point in its life. I can find no structural damage to indicate as such though. Even after sitting under cover for four months, I was able to start it on the first try. It is smoking a bit more now than when I parked it a few months ago, likely due to ageing fuel. Since cleaning the injectors, it has not smoked much at all and runs well until recently. After putting on a few miles, it appeared to be returning to normal. As is usually suspect, most of the rubber bits appear to be original. This is particularly apparent in the front and rear windshield seals which do allow for some water intrusion under heavy rain. I am including two seals in the sale- an OEM seal for the front windshield and an aftermarket seal for the rear. I recommend consulting the Mercedes Classic Center in CA to acquire an OEM for the rear as I’ve heard the aftermarket ones can be difficult to install. The OEM seal was not available when I purchased this one a couple years ago. The tires have some good tread left on them, but are showing their age. The interior is in excellent shape- a testament to the legendary durability of old Mercedes vehicles. The original radio is retained and working. The previous owner had installed speakers in the footwells, but I replaced the one in the dash and never used the ones in the footwells. I meant to remove them, but never acquired (or made) replacement panels. I did add a cradle and antenna for satellite radio, which works quite well and is easily removable without leaving a scar. The original antenna was replaced with a stock European OEM unit because of its smaller size- the original is also included with the sale. The headliner is damaged and was repaired by the previous owner on the driver rear side as pictured. I replaced the original glow plugs with a Bosch Duraterm system that used pencil-style plugs instead of the original loops. The system still uses the stock plunger to start and the new system operates flawlessly. Warm-ups are a quick 20 seconds and startups produce much less smoke than stock. The car does leak a bit of oil, although it did get better after running some fresh oil through it (Mobil Delvac 15W40). I believe the leak could be coming from the rear main seal, although a friend who is a Mercedes mechanic disagrees with me and feels it is more likely a freeze plug or seeping through a gasket due to a blocked oil channel. Either way, it will need to be looked at before returning to daily service. The blowback as observed through the oil filler when running does seem a bit excessive, but a compression test indicates good pressure in all cylinders (1- 320, 2-320, 3-320, 4-320). I did take some action by replacing the valve stem seals and adjusting the valves which improved performance significantly. Changing the injectors and performing a purge had the car running like a top before entering storage. The car did come with factory AC, although it has been removed. It was not working due to a leak in the system and when removing it, a valve was broken on top of the compressor. I don’t know if it can be fixed, but the compressor and its bracket were the only things removed from the car and do come with the sale. Also included are several boxes of small bits and pieces that came with the car when I bought it. Also the original first aid kit and the original new vehicle documentation as pictured. I will also include an aging car cover that is tailored for the vehicle and a custom sun shade as well. Work performed on the car since I’ve owned it includes: - Change automatic transmission fluid and filter - Replace fuel hoses - Clean air filter and replace oil bath - Replace primary and secondary fuel filters - Replace oil cooler hoses - Replace injectors and injector seals - Replace front bearing seal - Replace brake pads - Replace front wheel bearings - Replace front brake calipers - Replace front brake hoses - Replace hazard/turn relay - Repair speedometer - Adjust transmission - Replace valve guide seals - Replace belts and radiator hoses - Replace thermostat and flush cooling system - Adjust valves - Replace timing chain and tensioner - Purge fuel system and replace primary/secondary filters The vehicle will be sold as is/where is with no warranty beyond what has been described here. A $500 deposit is due via PayPal within 3 days, balance of payment upon pickup in certified funds. I will gladly work with your shipping company upon receiving full payment to make the purchasing experience as smooth as possible. I invite you to come out and see the car if you are in the area and will make myself available to answer any questions you may have. I have set a modest reserve in an effort to recoup an acceptable amount of my initial investment. Many, many more pictures are available here: http://ciclistapazzo.smugmug.com/Cars/1972-220D/22432768_Sh6rSV. Thank you for looking and good luck!
