Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my '57 Studebaker President Broadmoor Wagon. Only 1500 or so Broadmoors were made and they are few and far between today, especially in nice condition. This particular Broadmoor is a special one. It has almost all of the factory options and is the earlier of production that I've seen. The body number is 16, and the build date is very early in the '57 model year. Options include power steering, power brakes, clock, door handle and door edge guards, four barrel carb, automatic transmission, dual exhaust, push button radio, luggage rack, and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. Last summer, I moved and at that time I made a decision to sell my '58 Studebaker Commander in order to simplify things. This past fall, having gotten settled in and in a routine of sorts, I began to look for another Studebaker. I had always wanted a station wagon, and my friend John found this one up in Maryland. The car was sitting outside under a tarp, and would soon start rusting away if someone didn't step up and save it. I had John look at a few things and work the deal with the owner, and within a couple of days the car was mine. John had the car towed to his house a few miles away, and spent about 20 minutes getting the old wagon to run. The 289 V8 didn't take much coaxing to be brought back to life. A fuel pump, battery, and some fresh gas was all that she needed. John managed to drive it around his neighborhood a bit and even got the brakes to work. A couple of weeks later and the car was being delivered to my house just south of Atlanta. The car started right up and was driven off of the transport truck, and straight into my garage. I spent the next couple of months fixing minor issues and making the car roadworthy. Mechanically, the car seems to be very sound. The 289 starts up every time with a bump of the key, and runs as smooth as silk. It's just as strong and throaty as a Studebaker 289 should be. The Flight-O-Matic trans shifts fine as well. A few things were done to improve it a little more. The original WCFB carb was professionally rebuilt and is flawless. The car is responsive and scoots like a bat out of hell. I also replaced the valve stem seals and adjusted the valves. NOS 50's vintage Champion spark plugs were used. A new fuel pump and belts were the only other things needed. I do have a new set of spark plug wires that are included in the sale of the car. Some engine detailing has been done, but not everything. Stainless steel dual exhaust from Silvertone Exhaust with glasspack mufflers were installed. Other mechanical work included a full brake system rebuild. A new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes, rubber and steel lines were installed. The car has the original Hydrovac power brake system and will easily put your head through the windshield. The brakes need to be "run in" and re-bled and adjusted, but all of the hard work is done. The body is in pretty good shape, save for some fender rust. Both front fenders and the rear quarter panels need rust repair. The doors, tailgates, hood, and rocker panels are all solid and in great shape. The only other damage to the body is the right front fender. The damage is shown in the photos. The good news is that I have located factory NOS front fenders in Indiana for $250 each. I will gladly pass on that information to the new owner. The interior is one of the highlights of this car. It's all original and in really great condition. The vinyl is all still very pliable and there are no rips or tears. A few stains here and there, but nothing that some scrubbing or vinyl dye wouldn't take care of. Both front door glasses are cracked, so I will include a pair of NOS glass with the car. Some new door rubber has been installed, and what hasn't will be included. The carpeting is new from Rene Harger at Southeast Studebaker. I had him do up the set in the correct "Daytona Weave" material. The rear carpet had an issue and was sent back to Rene, but it will be back in my possession in 2 weeks or so. It will be sent with the car, or shipped to the new owner at my expense. Either way, the rear seat carpeting is included. New, correct windlace is also included, though not installed. The cargo area in this car is also in great shape. A little dusty and the rubber mat could use some cleaning, but just like the vinyl components, it's not torn or ripped anywhere. As you can see, the "back porch" has some minor rust, but also keep in mind that this car is unrestored. The paint could use a good buffing and would shine up a great deal, but it's not really that bad as it is. The wheels are aluminum kidney beans from Rocket Racing Wheels. The tires are also new 205/75/15 radials. The original steel wheels will be included if the buyer wants them. As you can see, this is a pretty decent old Broadmoor and is ready for you to drive and enjoy. It's a decent driver that you can show around as it is, or improve on as the budget allows. I've had a blast getting this car road-ready, and wouldn't be selling it had I not found another Studebaker that I want more. My loss, your gain, and someone out there will be getting a really cool Broadmoor. I should mention that the State of Georgia does not issue a title for a car this old. A Bill of Sale will be included. A paypal payment of $500 will be required within 24 hours of the auction ending, the remainder to be paid in full within 7 days of auction ending, or deposit will be forfeited and vehicle listed for sale once again. Unless other prior arrangements are made with me. I accept cash in hand, certified check or money order, or a wire transfer. Funds must be received in full and verified free and clear before vehicle possession transfers. Feel free to email Matt at mbstude@gmail.com or call 912-253-3037 for more information. Trades will be considered, so feel free to write with whatever you may have. Thanks for looking, and good luck! On Mar-29-12 at 19:32:09 PDT, seller added the following information: Thought I'd post a small update. The car has been sitting dormant, untouched, for 4 solid days now. I got in, pressed the accelerator once to set the choke, barely bumped the key and it started up immediately and ran perfectly at a fast idle.. This is one of the sweetest running Stude V8's I've ever seen.
