Vehicle Detail
I bought this beautiful bike in 2006 from MAX Cycles in Troy, NY, and have used it for local pleasure riding (none of the long road trips that it is bred for, unfortunately). It is as smooth and reliable as its reputation suggests, and I've loved riding it. Health now requires me to stop riding, so I'm offering a bargain. About the offer: The auction is starting at $500, which would be a steal, and there's no reserve. The high bidder in the auction format will get the bike, fairing, side cases, owners manual and tool kit. That lucky person might get the bike for a lot less than it's worth. However, if you use the Buy-It-Now feature at $2,000 I'll throw in hundreds of dollars worth of extras: the BMW tank bag, soft bag liners, and the BMW trickle charger. On a net basis, you'd be getting the bike itself for under $1,750. To be extra clear: you can bid on the bike alone, or you can use Buy-It-Now and get the extras with the bike. It will be a good buy either way. About the bike: MAX Cycles told me they'd taken it in trade-in on a new bike, after having maintained this bike themselves for the previous owner. It is in good shape mechanically and cosmetically, and these bikes are reputed to run, well, like forever. Here's what the BMW Motorcycle Buyer's Guide had to say about this model in 2003: All K75s used an identical liquid-cooled, fuel injected, double overhead cam 750cc power plant. The engine used a counterbalancer to reduce vibration, making the bike turbine smooth. . . . The two-valve-per-cylinder . . . mill was endowed with a large, easy-to-use torque curve, making the model a favorite with riders who prized a smooth, easy-to-ride motorcycle . . . . It was never the fastest nor best handling bike in the world. But it was smooth, quick, and nimble, the type of machine you could ride for hours on end. The bike starts up easily, idles well, and runs smoothly. "Smooth" is the word: there's little vibration, and the sound is turbine-like, too. Acceleration is steady and quick, though not neck-snapping; you're just constantly surprised at how fast you're going. The faster you go the more solid the bike feels; 80mph seems relaxed. About the maintenance history: When I bought the bike it was in very good shape, with new windshield and intake boots. I received a summary from MAX Cycles that indicated the bike had received regular service from dealers in the NE since its original purchase. During my ownership I've had the bike serviced at Cliff's Cycle Revolution in Danbury CT. I've put only a few miles on the bike since its last 12k service a little over a year ago, when MAX said everything was in good condition. All the fluids were replaced at that time, along with the fuel filter and plugs, and the clutch was adjusted. The shop noted that the tires have plenty of tread left; there's an Avon Venom-X 100/90-18 on the front and a Dunlop 491 Elite II 120/90B18 on the back. The battery was replaced in 2011. The bike shows no signs of ever being in an accident or laid down. I know of nothing problematical with the bike from the mechanical perspective. I took it out today for the first time after winter lay-up; it started immediately, rode beautifully, and everything worked perfectly. Truth in advertising: The only problem I've had with the bike was my own fault: I learned the hard way either to ride the bike often or to keep the battery on a trickle charger, thus the new battery. The shop says both tires should be the same make and model, but both seem to me to be too good to throw away. Cosmetically, the bike itself looks very good for its age and mileage but shows signs of normal usage and wear. The fairing and side cases show some cosmetic issues if you look hard, but both are completely functional: the hard cases have cracks that were patched DIY by a PO, and the headlight screen integral to the fairing has hairline cracks around the fastening screws. (The headlight itself is fine.) About the extras you'll receive only if you use Buy-It-Now: The tank bag is by BMW, fitted for the K75 and K100. It has two zippered compartments plus transparent map case in the normal configuration and a third zippered compartment that can be added. It can be unzipped from the tank mat and carried with handle or shoulder strap. It also has a rain cover. The side case liners are like new, barely used. They, too, can be removed and carried with handle or shoulder strap. The BMW charger is nearly new, and keeps the battery constantly topped off. I've described the bike as clearly and accurately as I can, and disclosed all of the issues I know about, but the sale will be as-is, where-is, with no warranty whatsoever. Please do your research, examine the photos carefully, and send me your questions. Take the trouble to be informed, and bid only if you're serious, please. I'll need a $500 nonrefundable deposit within 48 hours of the close of the auction, and full payment needs to clear before transfer of possession. The CT title is clear, so the transfer should be easy, but the registration hasn't been renewed. You'll need to pick up the bike or arrange for shipping at your cost. I'll be happy to cooperate with your agent or shipper, but the arrangements will be up to you. This bike deserves to be ridden often and well, and will reward any owner with high standards and a taste for open road. As I learned myself, you don't need to break your bank to have an excellent machine. Thanks for looking. On Mar-18-12 at 10:42:10 PDT, seller added the following information: NOTE ADDED ON 3/18: THE BUY-IT-NOW FEATURE DISAPPEARED WITH THE FIRST AUCTION BID. HOWEVER, I CONTINUE TO INTEND THAT THE EXTRAS THAT WERE TO BE INCLUDED WITH A BUY-IT-NOW SALE WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE TRANSACTION IF THE BIDDING REACHES OR EXCEEDS $2,000. THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE SUBMITTED BIDS!
