Vehicle Detail
1971 MG MGB GT This is a nice solid 1971 MGB GT that is mostly restored with most of the hard stuff done already. It was a very solid car from Missouri with very minimal rust before its restoration. Even the floors are original and solid. This car runs and drives but will need to be finished before its road ready. If you have a little wrenching skill, tools, a garage and some free weekends, this is an easy project to finish. Unfortunately, the owner had a budget, which he exceeded, and ran out of money to finish it. Because he is unable to complete the project, he has to cut it loose. His loss is your gain. Being a mid west car, the body was solid to begin with and had very minimal rust. The floors appear to be original and pretty solid. It was undercoated from new. To finish it off, I would suggest hitting the underside with a wire brush to knock off the flaking undercoating, and respray it for a fresh appearance. The owner sent the car to a body shop where they took it down to bare metal. I have a few pictures of the car in the raw showing how solid it was. Only the bottom of the driver’s rocker needed a small repair, not needing whole panel. Even inside of doors and hatch was stripped for paint. The body was smoothed, primed and prepped for color. He decided to paint it bright red after seeing a Hemmings article on the MGB GT and the cover car was red. The paint finish is smooth with an even finish. The front markers light buckets are painted over. He was going to replace them anyway but didn’t get that far. The chrome bumpers are original. They are not rusted but are bit dull from age. The rest of the trim is in original condition as well. The glass is in good shape but has some typical light scratches on the driver’s and passenger roll up windows. The interior is half way there. The carpet is new. The door and side panels are in good shape. The padded windowsill rests for the door panels are included. They had mounting brackets for a roadster, not a coupe so we were unable to mount them. The dash has the usual cracks and will need to be replaced at some point. The front seat bottoms need to be recovered. The rear seat is in good shape. His plan was to go black with the interior but again, ran out of money to finish. The original headliner is still in serviceable condition. There is a rust hole in the box under the dash on the driver’s side. The radio is a stock unit from a Volkswagen. The engine compartment was repainted black and the motor sprayed red. It seems to run OK. It idles smooth and it doesn’t blow smoke. It has good throttle response too. The air cleaners are missing. The clutch feels good. It doesn’t chatter and it grabs fine. The brakes stop fine. I was not able to drive the car at speed on road as this is still a project car and some of the lights were not on the car. The tires have good tread but are starting to crack from age. At least they are an inexpensive size to replace when the time comes. Personally, I think this car would look awesome with a set of chrome wire wheels or Panasports anyway. Overall, you are getting a real decent MGB GT that most of the major stuff has been done. Replace the chrome, recover the seats, and the final finishing stuff and you’ll have a fun little MG coupe to buzz around with. Or… gut the interior, install some performance parts, and you’d have a super fun vintage racer! Either way, it won’t take much to complete this very cute English sports car.
