Vehicle Detail
1968 Mustang GT converted to 67 Shelby GT 500 Rare Car by Marti Report - One of only 243 with these Paint & Trim Codes Show Quality Single Stage Acrylic Enamel in Original Color Complete Original Drive Train, all Rebuilt --> History: This Mustang started life as a 68 GT Fastback, with a 302ci motor ("J" Code) backed by a C4 automatic transmission, and with the exterior in Acapulco Blue (same color now), with the interior in Blue (now in black). A few years back the car was transformed to appear as a 67 Shelby GT 500. A Deluxe Marti Report is included with this sale that depicts the details of the original car as it rolled off the assembly line. The current state of the restoration, as you will see in the photos, is incomplete; although, most of the hard work has been done, and much of the expensive work and parts have been completed and included. Regardless, this is still a project car with areas and parts that need restoration. The good news here is that the average person that has mechanical skills and some basic equipment should be able to complete this project with very little outside labor cost. Body & Paint: The restoration on the body and paint as you see it was competed more than six years ago, and with it being a Wisconsin car it did have rust, so a fair amount of panel and rail replacement did occur. As it stands now the body is solid metal, it is extremely straight, and the paint quality is show condition end to end, with only a few very minor imperfections, mainly on the lower rear valance panel from moving the car to and from locations. The paint on the car is Dupont ChromaBase, with Dupont ChromaClear, and there are NO ridge lines between the White center stripes and the Acapulco Blue; the side stripes are decals. There was a small amount of left over Acapulco Blue paint, and this will also go with the sale. Interior: The interior is one area the needs a fair amount of work; however, several updates have already been made, including new carpet, new seat upholstery, new kick panels, new sill plates with Shelby emblems, new Shelby dash emblem; and, also included are items such as: new instrument cluster bezel, new Shelby dash trim, new door panels, and a few other new pieces. The primary work needed is with the instrument cluster, restoring the heater box and controls, along with probably replacing the heater core. I am not sure if the AM/FM radio works, but at least it appears to be original to the car. Also, the dash pad appears to be in very good condition, just not sure if it was replaced recently. Along with that, the headliner looks to be new, but needs some attention for a better fit. Motor & Drive Train: Motor - The motor included with this sale is a mid-70's 351 Windsor which has been rebuilt and stroked to 393ci. I am making this motor OPTIONAL, in other words this motor is included with this sale, but if you don't want the motor I am offering an instant rebate of $2,000 off the purchase price (high bid). I know that some of you guys may have your own motor, or would rather use a different motor, so that is the reason for this option. If you take this option, the motor with the valve covers, and the direct bolt on motor parts would be excluded from the sale; anything else shown or described would still be included in the sale. For Transport purposes, I am also offering to bolt both the motor and transmission in place so that they don't have to be transported / shipped separately; and, there will be no charge for this as it is included as part of this sale; however, I am not offering to do more than that as I don't have the time. The work on the motor was done by a local speed shop that builds motors for the local dirt track racers; and yes, I do have the receipt and contact information. This motor has not been fired up / run since it was built, and the roller rockers were removed for preservation and to keep tension off of the valve springs while in storage. Further down in this add I go into all the details of the motor build. Transmission - The used transmission and shifter included with this sale is a Top Loader 4spd from a later 60's Mustang. The transmission appears to be good shape, but is showing wear on the 3rd gear shifting splines. Working the transmission on the bench everything works correctly, smoothly, and no strange noises. As an option, I can offer an exchange, plus extra dollars ($550) for a completely rebuilt Mustang Top Loader 4spd (pictured in Black). This transmission has been completely rebuilt with new bearings, bushings, seals, synchro's, o-rings, gaskets, and a new second gear. The casing has also been media blasted and coated in black epoxy primer; again, the rebuilt transmission is an additional purchase option. In either case, the original shifter shown will be included with this sale. Rear-end - This 9 inch rear end has a locker (posi), and I believe it is a 3.0 gear ration. Also this rear end has disc brakes, and they appear to be factory. It is somewhat of a mystery to me as I am not sure just what it came out of, but it is complete, it is the right length, and appears to be in good working order. I did not hook up the rear brakes as I had intended to pull this rear end out, restore it, and bolt it back in place, just never got around to it. Also note in the photos that during the restoration of this car, the disc brake air dam holes from the side scoops were put in place so that the ducting could be completed for the cooling of the rear brakes. Areas that need work: Brakes - Only part of the brake work needed has been completed, and this included a new master cylinder, all new brake lines, and rebuilt front calipers; however, the rear brakes have not been hooked up yet as the rear end brake lines need to be installed and the rear calipers need to be restored or replaced. Also, all four rotors need attention; so at this time, only the front brakes are up and working. Steering - The steering gear box has been restored to factory spec's, along with the replacement of the lower control arms and upper/lower ball joints. The strut bars have also been restored but, still needed is the restoration of the rest of the steering components, including the steering linkage, the power assist, and I am sure a front end alignment will be needed. Interior - as described above in the Interior section Drive Train - as you can see, the entire drive train needs to be assembled; and, the drive shaft will need some work to match up to the rear end yoke. Also, the front slip yoke on the shaft should be replaced as it is quite pitted. Lights & Wiring - Most of the exterior lighting has not been hooked up, and both the front blinker lights, and rear backup lights need to be restored or replaced. The main front wiring harness has been restored; it is just a matter of getting the rest of the front lights installed and getting things hooked up. The rear light wiring harness is in need of some attention or replacement. Known major parts missing, or parts still needed: * Z Bar and Rods (as this car originally had an automatic) * Water Pump, Carb, Air Cleaner, Power Steering Pump and Brackets, Fan assembly, Fuel Pump, Distributor * Exhaust System * Clutch Assembly * Backup Lights * Engine and Alternator Wire Harnesses * Shocks Motor Build Details: The motor was built by Extreme Enterprises (Race Engines & Performance Parts) out of Cecil WI; they cater to the Shawano racing boys and they had just built a new shop at the time they built this motor. They are located at: N7125 Cheese Factory Rd. Zip 54111. Greg, the owner of Extreme Enterprises, figured the compression ratio is just short of 10 to 1, he thought somewhere between 9.5 and 10 to 1. The motor was stroked out to 393ci, and here is the calculation that was used: Number of Cyls - 8 x 0.7854 x bore of 4.030 to the 2nd power x stroke of 3.850 = 393ci The Crank used in the build is an RPM Crank using #5140 forged materials (rpmmaxx.com/cranks.html). This crank was also re-balanced during assembly, and the block was trimmed as needed for clearances. The pistons are Wiseco Forged with Plasma Moly Rings, and connected to the crank with Steel H Beam Rods. Also used were Roush cast iron Heads with 64cc chambers and 200cc intake volume, size of 2.02 on the intake valves and 1.60 on the exhaust valves (speedwaymotors.com/COMPLETE-ROUSH-200-CYLINDER-HEAD,1340.html) The Cam used is a Comp cam # 35-330-3 with a .518 lift and 292 duration to be used with Hyd lifters (compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=873&sb=2) Next is the Scorpion Roller Rockers, # SCP 1018 with a 1.6 ratio and to fit the 7/16 screw in studs in the Roush heads (scorpionperformance.com/newsite1/scorpion.php?category_id=83) Along with the roller rockers, was a full set of PC 4242 5/16 Guide Plates and SBI Push Rods (#192-1339 & #192-1338) along with DYN 900 Hyd lifters. The year of the block is 1975. The motor was fully balanced, but not blue printed. The four barrel intake is an Edelbrock Performer (351-W) dual plane. Again, this motor is included with this sale; however, if you don't want it I am offering to take $2,000 off the purchase price and keep the motor.
