Vehicle Detail

Well, here is something rarely seen, a very cool 1971 Ford F350 rampback car hauler. Let's begin with a brief history. This truck was purchased by a San Jose, Ca based drag race team as a cab and chassis. They then stretched the frame and custon-built the sloping bed, side storage cabinets (6 in all) and the under-bed ramp storage tray. They included a winch, a large cabinet in the deck of the bed for spare motor storage, and a hoist (the hoist has been removed). It also had a pass-through "sleeper" connected to the cab (since removed). This truck was then bought and used by Bill Maier of Maier Racing fame to carry his Ford Mustang race car and equipment to Trans-Am races in the mid seventies. Last owned and used by Buzz Dyer to ferry his Trans Am Javelin. Indeed, this truck has race history. It is equipped with it's original 390 v8 and heavy-duty 4-speed manual transmission. It has manual steering, power front disc brakes, chrome wheels (duals in the rear) with 235/85r16 tires (2 are brand new, the others are excellent), deluxe stainless steel camper mirrors, heater/defroster, tinted windshield, and an AM radio. Finished in Ford Wimbledon white with black interior. It has an in-cab fuel tank (18 gallon) and an auxiliary under-chassis tank (since removed, but included). In 2007, the truck was completely refurbished. First, the 'sleeper' compartment was removed, this consisting of half of a camper shell perched behing the cab. In it's place is a period-correct looking spare tire/wheel rack. Also, the truck bed was shortened some 3 feet behind the rear wheels, as the original dragster was quite a bit longer than a pony car. The cab was removed, completely disassembled, soda-blasted to bare metal, primed, painted, and reassembled with all new rubber, seals, and bushings. The bed was also stripped, primed, and painted. The 390 was removed and torn down to the short block, inspected, and reassembled with a new timing chain, oil pan, head gaskets, Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley carburetor, hoses, and rebuilt alternator. The radiator was professionally rebuilt,as was the power brake booster. The tube headers were powder coated, and a new exhaust system was custom-built. For the chassis, the entire front suspension was removed, cleaned, painted, and re-assembled with new bearings, king pins, and bushings. The steering box was professionally rebuilt. The interior was treated to new carpet, dash pad, instrument bezel, door panels, rear-view mirrie, windshield, and heater core. The original AM radio was professionally rebuilt. Outside, new roof and side marker lights were installed. The original FoMoCo stainless camper mirrors were entirely rebuilt. Just this past summer a new coil and battery were installed. The truck could use: a paint repair on the left side of the bed (chipping in a small area), and the inside of the side storage cabinets should be sanded and painted, maybe with a bedliner, and a better (or replacement) front grille and bumper. Also, the horn and back-up lites do not work. The odometer shows the above mileage, but it is presumed to be not the actual mileage. This auction is for the car hauler only, no other vehicle is included. Don't just go to the car show, be the show! This thing gets a ton of attention, and stands out everywhere it goes. Most recently seen at the Montery Historic vintage car races, this is the ideal paddock truck! Has been seen carrying a 1965 Shelby (not included), and 1965 Mustang GT convertible, and a Bud Moore Boss 302 Trans Am race car. Be ready, when Shelby celebrates 50 years, and when Ford celebrates the Mustang's 50th anniversary, you'll want to show up with your car on top of this beauty! Ford, Mustang, Shelby, Trans Am, Boss, Javelin, race truck, slantback, rampback car hauler.
