From 1997 to 2004, BMW manufactured 40,218 units,[1] including a smaller engine version, the R850C, which was produced from 1997 to 2000. At the time of its introduction, the cruiser configuration represented more than half the US motorcycle market.[citation needed] The R1200C was BMW's attempt to tap into this market, and was a significant departure from their previous endeavors. The R1200C was designed by BMW head designer David Robb,[2] featuring a cruiser riding posture. From its inception, the R1200C featured a passenger seat that could fold up to become a driver backrest with three different angles, adjustable while riding. BMW first released the R1200C with an advance promotional placement of the motorcycle in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.[citation needed] The R1200C was one of four BMW motorcycles featured in The Art of the Motorcycle exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in 1998.[citation needed] When BMW ended production of the R1200C lineup, Dr. Herbert Diess, then President BMW Motorrad, cited a prime reason for discontinuing the bike as the apparent unsuitability of the 1,170 cc (71 cu in), 61 hp (45 kW) engine to then current market tastes and the unavailability of a suitable engine for further development, but did not rule out BMW pursuing a reinterpretation of the cruiser idea at a later date.[1] The final model of the R1200C to be produced was the commemorative Montauk model, of which 350 units were built.[1]Contents 1 Model year changes2 R1200C in film3 See also4 References Model year changesCustomized R1200C In 2000, the Avantgarde model (Graphite-look) was introduced. The bike was fitted with automatic reset of the indicator light switch In 2001, four models were launched with ABS.R1200C, the standard model.R1200C Euro, with engine protection bars, speedster screen, driving lights and a special Graphitan finish on selected components.R1200C Montana, with touring screen, large passenger seat, locking saddlebags, heated hand grips and engine guards.R1200C Phoenix, with two piece alloy wheels, speedster screen, halogen driving lights, chrome turn signal housings and additional chrome components. In November 2001, BMW upgraded the rear light bezel from chromed plastic to chromed metal. In 2002, the R1200CL was launched followed by the R1200CLC. The CL version came standard with twin spark ignition, a six-speed gear box, exhaust pipe heat guards, adjustable rear shock, heel-and-toe shifter, a fairing with two-position adjustable headlights, two 12VDC power outlets, integral three-piece luggage, a removable top case incorporating a passenger backrest, driver floorboards, tachometer, clock, ABS braking system, cruise control, heated hand grips, heated seats and passenger grab rails. The CLC came standard with radio/weather radio, CD player, chrome alternator cover, chrome engine guards and chrome luggage guards. The fairing was unique in that the standard windscreen was M shaped and incorporated were four lights, two standard beams on either side of two stacked high beams. An alarm system, intercom and GPS were available as an options. There were two color-matched plastic wind deflectors on either side of the gas tank which house some electronic components, primarily the cruise control, and the alarm system. Unlike the engine guards on the C, the wind deflectors preclude the use of foot-rests on top of the CL and CLC engine guards. In August 2003, the "Montauk" was launched, with twin-spark ignition, improvements of the gearbox and optional integrated ABS. In 2004, changes included twin-spark ignition, improvements of the gear box and integrated ABS now standard for all C-models along with travel-related damping shock absorber, onboard power socket, a pair of external battery charging contacts and braided stainless steel brake and clutch lines. R1200C in film The R1200C features in the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.[3][4] Michelle Yeoh, in her role as Chinese spy Wai Lin, rode the bike in the scene where she and 007 run from Elliot Carver's henchmen, who are chasing them in a helicopterWikimedia Commons has media related to: BMW R1200CList of James Bond vehicles References^ a b c "1998 BMW to Discontinue Cruiser Motorcycles After 2005".
