Vehicle Detail
HISTORY: This truck, according to the ORIGINAL LINE SETTING TICKET, was built at the Ft. Wayne plant, stamped "VEHICLE BUILT November 22, 1978" and shipped via the N and W Railway to Triangle Trk Serv. Co., 1919 E. Main St., Canon City, Colorado. The 1979 Scout II had been ordered and built to specs for Jack McClure, right down to the factory-air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, and cruise control. The color was light gray with a black interior trim pack including the dash, seats, carpet, and side panels. The ceiling was off-white and the remaining interior paint was the light gray. He ordered the custom interior LHD & deluxe exterior trim pack, the sliding RR quarter window, luggage rack travel top, as well as, the storage box console (sits between the bucket seats). In October of 1998, the truck was "discovered" in widow McClure's garage in Pueblo, Colorado, where it had been since Jack McClure had died. (Date Unknown). The mileage was approximately 63,000+. Ray Willett, a professor at Denver University, had somehow "stumbled" on this rare gem and offered to buy it. On October 28, 1998 he did just that. According to the Colorado Registration/tax receipt, he paid $975. At that time, the car was repainted a two-toned silver & platinum. A stereo/cassette player w/Blaupunkt speakers replaced the old radio, a new top was added to the storage box and it appears that the bucket seats were replaced at that time. According to the line setting ticket, all else appears to be original to the truck. In July of 1999, I answered an add in the Denver Post, and took the Scout for a test drive down to Federal Valley Motors, in Denver. (I had been told that Earl Goodwin, the owner of FVM, had owned the very first Scout dealership in Colorado.) Nevertheless, he went over the truck with a fine-toothed comb. He told me that it was absolutely rust-free, at that time, and whatever the seller was asking I could pay it and would not have any regrets. I bought the Scout on July 6, 1999 for $6200. The mileage was 68,772. (Earl was right.) The truck has been my pride & joy for 11 years. For 11 years it has started up- first time- every time. Still runs like a champ. Service/ Mechanic's History: I purchased this Scout as a 47 year old single female and have been the only driver. I have never had it off-road. I lived in the town of Boulder, Colorado when I bought it. I moved to Taos, N.M. in July, 2002, and back to Boulder at the end of 2007. It has been my sole means of transportation and therefore, has been properly maintained. Mountain Truck of Longmont, Co., is where Ray Willett had the Scout serviced and introduced me to "Booner"- a mechanic at Mountain Truck for 39 years. He worked solely on Scouts until the mid 80's. (90% of any work done on my Scout has been done by him. In fact, the Scout is presently at his farm 7 miles up the road from me.) While living in Taos, I drove back to Boulder for general maintenance. Because I wouldn't let anyone but Booner under the hood, I paid to have him come to Taos to service the Scout in 2007. I have all work orders and invoices, including 34+ receipts for OIL CHANGES. All original International Harvester service & warranty books*. *The Scout II XLC Series Service Manuals are in EXCELLENT condition. PICTURE ILLUSTRATED. ($478.21) 1999-2007: Used (2) sets of "BIG FOOT" BIG O TIRES. INTERIOR/ EXTERIOR CONDITION: I have tried to take decent photos both inside and out in order that you might get an accurate description of the Scout in its present-day condition. The clear-coat has completely peeled away on the hood and roof of the truck and other areas around the truck as shown in the photos. Needs a paint job. THE UNDER-CARRIAGE IS RUST-FREE with the exception of SOME RUST STARTING AROUND the BODY MOUNTS typical of a 32 year old Scout I should think. There is rust over both of the rear fenders as you can see. The left rear quarter panel has a superficial scratch about 18" long. No rust on floor boards or in door hinge area. Rust has started on rocker panels and in a small area at base of windshield. The tint paper on the windows is bubbled and needs to be replaced. The left rear end cap has a dent that I am told can be "pulled out". Overall, there are a few nicks & dings. The dashboard has a 2"-3" mild split that appeared 4 years ago. The radio/stereo needs to be replaced but, the Blaupunkt speakers are still good. Air-conditioning, tilt-steering wheel, and cruise control all work great. Cigarette lighter, as well as, all knobs and gauges are in fine working order and are original to the truck. Carpet's still in tact. Seat belts both front and rear. Also, the truck has a trailer hitch. The tires have about 20,000 miles on them. Spare w/cover: Very Good. ANY QUESTIONS mechanical or otherwise will be fielded by me and answered by Booner, my mechanic. Any test drives will be accompanied by him. ( I know absolutely zip about cars or trucks.) I LOVE MY SCOUT. Always felt confident and safe while driving this truck even @ 75 MPH on I-25. If it wasn't for the high cost of gas-which I can no longer afford-I would keep her in a heart beat. My mechanic has always said "she's got 200,000 miles" in her. It is my hope that someone will buy my Scout to be restored. I'll keep my fingers crossed! This vehicle is being sold "AS IS" and has been described as fairly as possible to the best of my abilities. Regarding questions I have received: The ACTUAL ODOMETER READING is 39,933. The Scout flipped @ 100,000 miles and began again @ 0. I changed the Ebay milage box form to read:139,933 the ACTUAL MILAGE on the Scout to eliminate any confusion.
