Vehicle Detail

Up for sale here on Ebay, presented by Kurt Tanner Restorations, is a 1952 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster. Out of the 7600 total production for 120 Roadsters, only approximately 1150 had the SE , or special equipment designation. This included an uprated engine to 180 bhp, 3/8 inch high lift camshafts, twin exhaust system, lightened flywheel, special front crankshaft dampener, 1 inch thick torsion bars, and center-lock wire wheels. This 1952 car features the early body with separate chrome parking light housings, but late enough to have the foot vent boxes. This car was produced as an SE model with all the upgraded options, but early enough before the factory designated these cars with the letter 'S' as a prefix in the VIN number. It is a full, numbers matching car. It's factory color scheme was originally Creme with Red trim, with Fawn top and sidescreens. The original wire wheels are still painted in the correct body color paint. It is an exceptional car for restoration, and has been disassembled with much work, money, and time already spent. It is a 100% totally complete vehicle, with several items already purchased for it. I purchased this vehicle approximately 2 years ago in this condition, but 6 months previous to that had seen the car fully assembled and totally complete, ready for restoration. I can testify to it's completeness. Please read on for an accurate description.BODY As shown by the photos, the body and panels on this car are in excellent condition. The body was carefully soda-blasted inside and out, and all minor repairs were made including the typical corrosion in the battery boxes. The metal return edges supporting the wooden floorboards were weak, so they were consequently replaced. The B-post box pillars had some localized repairs, as well as a very small section at the tail end of the body. The biggest job was the full restoration of all 4 door hinges. These needed complete removal and repair, but are now perfect and well-greased. All aluminum panels were painstakingly and carefully stripped by hand, scrubbed and washed to a lovely bare-metal finish, inside and out. The bonnet has been very tastefully and sensibly louvered some time in the fifties or sixties, and is done in an attractive and expert way. The trunk lid is in good condition, but needs the rearmost, lower wood piece replaced. The doors need some welding of minor cracks in the hinge mount areas. All panels line up considerably well, and the main body only has a handful of dents. There is no accident damage. After an easy day's work of fitting up panels and alignment, this car would be certainly ready for the paint shop. All other associated body parts and panels have been blasted as well.MECHANICALS Totally complete. The engine and gearbox have been left completely together and intact, still with the original coil, carbs, generator, starter, intake and exhaust manifolds, air cleaners, breather pipe, distributor, oil filter, etc. The engine is currently stuck from sitting, and will need to be freed up and disassembled for rebuild, as well as the gearbox. The steering box was partially dismantled for removal from the car, but looks to be in very good condition. The rear axle has been steam cleaned, turns smoothly, and seems to be in good shape. The rear splined hubs will need replacing. The radiator still has the original core and looks very good. CHASSIS Considerable time and money has been spent here. The chassis frame along with all associated suspension and undercarraige parts have been powder-coated in black gloss to an excellent standard. There is some minor pitting on the top part of the frame, just above the area where the passenger rocker panel would reside once the body is back on the chassis. The area would not be visible, though. All suspension parts look excellent and are waiting to go back on the frame once chassis parts are purchased. New rear springs need to be purchased. All chassis nuts and bolts have been correctly replated in black cadmium for an original finish. All fuel and brake lines have been retained for replicating. The 4 original brake drums have been machined and only require painting. The brake shoes are in good condition. The original rear shocks have been rebuilt and are still in the box. The front splined hubs are excellent. The car comes with 5 original painted spoke rims plus a set of 4 newer 54-spoke chrome wire wheels fitted with 6.00x16 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires. Overall, the chassis and parts are beautiful and require simple, straightforward reassembly.INTERIOR TRIM AND CHROME All old interior panels have been removed and saved for reference. A newer OSJI full retrim kit has been purchased for this car in red and is still wrapped up in the protective bags. This includes full wool carpet kit, interior panel kit, leather armrest, sufficient leather to recover cockpit railings, trunk kit, leather seat kit, bulk black canvas for top and tonneau, etc. - everything needed for a complete retrim. The seats have already been correctly retrimmed and look very nice. This car is totally complete with original sidecurtain set, top frame and anchor bar, dashboard, gauges, swithgear, steering wheel, hornpush, heater, wiper motor, etc., etc. These items need restoring but are complete and decent. All the original chrome is present, but definitely needs a replate. The grille is in excellent condition. The bumpers are a little banged up. One of the windshield glass is broken.MISCELLANEOUS As seen by the photos, lots of items and bracketry has been cleaned up or carefully bead-blasted. Several items have attended to, with alot of additional work expended. OVERVIEW This Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster for sale here is totally complete. I can think of nothing that is missing from the car. It is a very solid car with good integrity and a very good body. If you are looking to restore a good 120, then this car offers approximately a $10,000-$15,000 headstart(in the trim kit, powder-coating, chrome wheels and tires, soda -blasting,parts,sheet-metal repair, labor, etc.) over other assembled candidates, which may have rust, accident-damage, and most likely need door hinge repair. All sheetmetal and body repairs to this car were professionally carried out and at a large expense, and this car is ready for straightforward body and paint. Considerable time, efforts, and funds have gone into this car, and have been properly spent. The added bonus is that this car is an early, seperate parking light car with the SE specification, which adds value to the finished product. This car is sold with an old Oklahoma title, with history back to Washington state where it was possibly delivered to when new. It is sold with it's original brass ID plate, original body tag, key and key fob, and original Jaguar hood emblem.
