Volkswagen : Bus/Vanagon Vintage Bus for Daily Driver, Restoration or Investment No reserve auction ends Monday October 24th, 7PM Western Time, 10PM Eastern Time. The NADA value on these buses has doubled in the last five years since I sold my last bus, a 1971 Campmobile, on eBay for $14,100 to a happy California buyer! These buses are a great investment, with a upward climbing value. Here is the NADA value for this bus: http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1969/Volkswagen/Transporter/Campmobile/Values Video (1:11): (Photos at bottom of listing) Summary: The vehicle just passed the rigorous Massachusetts state inspection, and she is ready to drive, to restore, or for an investor! The frame is solid. The engine is new. The transmission, breaks, shocks, battery and tires have all been replaced and work great. This vehicle has some issues with body rust, and I am including the sheet metal you would need for a body restore. Anyone thinking of owning a classic VW camper bus should have a sense of adventure, and a measure of one or more of the following: mechanical knowledge, friends with mechanical knowledge, or money. Car is available to inspect at any time. If you have questions, please contact me, Travis, or call my cell 978-505-1359. History The bus was purchased at Northampton Motors, Inc in Northampton, Massachusettes in 1969, and impeccably serviced at that dealership for at least 57,000 miles according to the original owners manual and service log, included. In the 1980's she was owned by a Reverend and serviced at Baggetta Volkswagen Dealership in Greenfield, Massachusetts. I purchased this bus in 1994 in Massachusetts. I drove her to Asheville, North Carolina, Cleveland, Ohio to see the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and to Banff in the Canadian Rockies, a 5,500 plus round trip journey through remote reaches of the northern US and southern Canada. I have owned air-cooled VWs since 1991, and driven them most summers between 1993 and 2006. This included a 1971 Beetle, a 1971 Campmobile, both sold in 2006 on eBay, as well as this 1969 Campmobile. I did all the mechanical work to keep this fleet of VWs running and driving great for 13 years. Vehicle comes with receipts and related information. In 2001 I began working on a new engine for this bus. I decided to get an all new engine case and do a full rebuild with mostly new parts. Despite the new engine completed in 2007, I never drove the bus, in-part because this bus was in Massachusetts and I was often out of state. The new engine is tuned up, she has new tires and battery and is ready to go to a new home. Clean title in my name and ready to sign over to you. Engine I have built several engines for my fleet of VWs. On this last engine, I checked all clearances to ensure the correct tolerance. I used new parts wherever I could, and set the compression to run on low 87 octane fuel. For a VW bus, this engine runs cool and strong. She only has a few hundred miles on her since the rebuild. Here are some engine details from the rebuild: New OEM VW Case New Cima/Mahle Pistons New VW Heads New German Lifters New Camshaft with double thrust bearings Re-ground OEM German crankshaft Re-bushed German rods Equalizer pulley wit timing marks 4 into 1 exhaust header with "quiet pack" muffler for more power and a better sounding engine Heat exchangers are thermally wrapped to keep the cylinder heads cool and the interior warm. pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition replaces the factor points for less maintenance, more power, and better fuel efficiency. Gene Berg Full flow oil filter kit. If you plan to drive a VW, this is nearly a necessity. Makes changing the oil filter a snap, and keeps the engine much cleaner than the stock filter could. I also added VDO gauges for the oil temp, oil pressure and volts, so you can keep an eye on engine health. This bus has a CB engine air fuel monitor to dial-in the carburetor. Comes with the optional lock on the engine compartment door to keep everything protected. If the above doesn’t make sense to you, that’s OK, just know, while there are no guarantees with a vintage VW, she runs right and is built to last. I build engines to feel confident driving in remote areas. Body The Frame is completely solid, but she does have some body rust. I am including all the body panels and window seals listed below, and purchased from CIP1.com. The side sliding door needs to be held up as it is opened, otherwise it falls out of the track. The canvas on the pop-top and the two cots (one in the pop-top and one over the front seats) have all been replaced. The fiberglass pop-top has a small easy-to-fix hole in it. The bus has new carpeting, new curtains, and plush, soft, warm lambskin seat covers. Some of the wood paneling is great, some of the lower paneling is in poor condition. I have also added an auxiliary battery to power some of the interior amenities like an electric faucet (original hand pump is included), interior lights, and Sony CD Stereo with remote, a powerful Kenwood 800 Watt Amp and four Jensen speakers. The front speakers need to be replaced. Overall the interior is in good condition. New panels, seals and cables: Left side rocker panel 6 inches $29.95 Right rocker panel bus 68-79 $15.95 Lower track assembly for sliding door $113.95 Rear rocker panel 15in left $16.95 Rear rocker panel 15in right $16.95 Left front wheel arch lower front $23.95 Right front wheel arch lower front $23.95 Batter-tray bus 68-72 $28.45 Clutch cable $5.5 Accelerator cable 3670mm-bus $3.5 Seal front door, right & left $37.95 Seal, windshield w/o molding grove $14.95 2 Side window seal louvered window, bus 68-79 $29.95 Seal, side window w/vent left 68-79 bus $45.95 Engine door seal $10.95 Seal, Side window, rear, L/R $29.95 Over $400 value in body parts, seals and cables included as a free bonus! Mechanicals I replaced the brakes and shocks, both still have low miles and function perfect. I also just put on new Hankook front tires. The Front tires have only a few hundred miles on them, the back tires not much more. The Tires are 8-ply light-truck tires, so she handles like a bus should. The fuel gauge is no longer working properly. The transmission and clutch are strong, with easy shifting thanks to a short-throw shifter kit. Battery is brand new, 800+ CCA with a 3 year warranty. The auxiliary battery will need to be replaced or removed. I installed European headlights for great visibility at night, as well as fog lamps. It was my intention to restore the body and keep this bus "forever" after I sold my 71 camper here on eBay in 2006. But instead I broke my leg skiing in Utah and was unemployed for 6 months. Now, years later, I have a wife and baby and we are saving for a down payment on a house. Otherwise I would keep her, as a great investment, and as a really fun summer camper. (Way better investment than stocks at this point, plus you can't drive stocks.) Engine update:Engine also has VDO tachometer added, built into the dashboard. New carburetor and Distributor were used for the engine build, along with new Bosch points, cap, rotor and plugs. Like every air cooled VW I have ever known, she does leak a little bit of oil. Engine tin is mostly good condition original, including the functioning thermostat system. (Avoid the new aftermarket stuff, most of it is junk.)If there are other updates, I will post them down here.
