NO RESERVE!PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO VIEW 80 PICTURES OF THE CAR Up for auction is a 1970 Mercedes Benz 600 SWB Limousine with 423G Tobacco Brown Paint and Cognac Leather. VIN 100.012-12-001863 is an original Southern California car that was ordered new by Mr. Irving Bulmash, one of the first large supermarket owners in the Los Angeles area. I am the third owner of the car, which has 125,000 miles on it. It was in the Los Angeles area until I purchased it. It was purchased from the estate of the well-known 600 Restoration Shop of the late Peter Krausert (Herr 600 or Mr. 600). While in Herr 600’s care the car received fresh paint job (bare metal strip down) at a cost of over $13,000.00. I have records from Herr 600’s estate showing the paint work and the dis-assembly of the car. The mechanicals of the car have been extremely well maintained and have not been through the hands of numerous "mechanics." This is evident by the originality of the engine bay. Most of the original hose clamps, fittings, and hardware are all still present. Here is a link to an online album of pictures of the 600: https://picasaweb.google.com/115844324020179100671/Brown600# While putting the car back together in the last 3 months it received all new seals. The front and rear glass received new gaskets (the rear gasket is now NLA). All 4 door seals along with the trunk gasket are new. The front windows have new window channel and all four windows have new horizontal window felt inside and out. Other rubber parts that were replaced include the grill seal, wheel arch chrome rubber seal, door handle gaskets and door lock gaskets. The 15” hubcaps are also brand new. While making sure everything was running properly, I also cleaned out the fuel pump and replaced ALL the rubber fuel lines at the rear of the car. The car drives and handles beautifully. It is extremely smooth as all of the rubber suspension parts are in excellent shape (with the exception of the rear sway bar bushings). The steering is nimble and the power is wonderful. The transmission shifts smoothly and is adjusted properly. The car’s 6 brake calipers stop the car quickly as they should and there are no leaks or sticky calipers. The tires have plenty of tread left and give a surprisingly quiet ride. This particular 600 is completely rust free and the underside of this car is impressively straight and un-molested. Due to the air suspension, many 600s have had fuel and airline holders or the front sub frame dragged over the ground when the suspension dropped over the years. This particular car is the exception. The car starts right up every time I get in it and I feel comfortable driving it anywhere. Every time I take a spin in this car I am reminded why the 600 is the ultimate automobile. The comfort, ride and feeling of driving a 600 is un-paralleled. There is nothing else like one on the road. Engine: The motor in this 600 idles perfectly and has loads of strong smooth power. This 600 has a tight motor that will take you anywhere. The drivetrain was obviously very well maintained by Herr 600. Transmission: The transmission shifts smoothly and is geared properly. Many 600 and 6.3 transmissions are clunky and shift too early or too late. The transmission in this 600 feels amazing and its kickdown function is working as it should. Just like most of the M100 transmissions this one has a slight amount of leak down. Nothing significant. Air Suspension: The air bellows on this car look newer, they have small cracks on the outer surface but nothing significant. The air valves appear to have been rebuilt at some point, but the suspension does slowly drop down over a 3 day period. The front drops first, followed by the rear. Expect a height control valve needing to be rebuilt. Hydraulics: The trunk lock was adjusted last month by my mechanic so that it shuts properly. All the hydraulics: front seats, rear bench seat, air flap, windows, trunk lid work as they should. There were two leaks when I initially purchased the car. One was from the drivers door window switch and the other was from the right rear window lift cylinder. Both have settled themselves apparently as both have not leaked since I bled the system twice and have begun to use the car more frequently. The window switches on this 600 do not suffer from worn switch levers like many 600’s do. Thankfully this is a later style 600 so it does not have the finicky door close assist latches, which always want to be rebuilt. Glass: The front and rear glass seals were replaced last month. I was lucky and came across a few rear glass seals, which are currently NO LONGER AVAILABLE from Mercedes. The windshield has tiny amounts of bubbling in the bottom corners, which is hard to notice. The rear glass unfortunately began to crack after the new seal was installed. There is a vertical crack in the from of a Y in the enter of the rear glass from the top to the bottom. It is a small thin crack, and is not always noticeable, it is hard to notice in the pictures. If you look close you will see it. It is more apparent from the side of the car. Leather: The cognac leather in the car is extremely nice with the exception of a few small flaws. There is a V shaped tear in the rear seat back seen in one of the pictures. The drivers door panel has a small 1.5 inch portion of the piping that is visible. The drives seat has a few tiny portions where the surface of the leather has been scraped off somehow. The left B-Pillar has a few areas where the color has been scraped off, but it is not actually torn. The right B-Pillar has two small tears which I patched with replacement cognac leather. The leather in the car has most of the cognac spotting still visible. The leather in the car does have small flaws, but overall is in excellent shape and is still very soft. The seat cushions are in excellent shape. Exhaust: The exhaust on the car is in excellent shape and does not need any repairs. The only thing I may point out is that I hear what I think is a slight exhaust leak from the left side of the motor, I believe the exhaust manifold gaskets may need replacing. Carpeting: The carpets in the car are excellent. There are a few small areas that could use a little shampoo, but besides that they look almost new. I believe they have been replaced. Wood: The wood in the car is walnut and is completely original. The dash bow and the right side A Pillar piece are the worst. The dash bow will need refinishing, but the original veneer is fine. The right side A-pillar piece is fine except for the bottom portion of the piece, which has had a small portion of the veneer flaking off. The door caps all have some fading and lifting of the finish and could use a re-finishing. Most of the other pieces of timber in the set are in quite nice shape. If you choose to make this a show car the wood will need re-finishing. Paint: The paint work on the car was done by Herr 600’s painter down in Southern California. The paint job cost over $13,000.00 and is an extremely nice job. It has a deep luster and the body is very straight. Unfortunately there are a two small scratches on the car and 1 door chip. The door chip is on the right rear door I believe and is not very noticeable. The two small scratches are on the left side of the car I believe, one of them being on the lower portion of the drivers door. The color is Tobacco Brown but I believe when mixing the paint they chose to make it a slightly lighter shade of brown. I know this because the trunk lid was still in bare metal when I purchased the car so I had to have my painter adjust the paint to attempt to match the paint on the rest of the car. Because of this, the trunk lid has a slightly redder tone to it that the rest of the car, but it is a close match. Chrome: The chrome on the car is in great condition. The mouldings and trim are all in excellent shape. The bumpers are extremely straight and have no dings or dents. The rear bumper is amazingly straight which is extremely rare. While the bumpers are not as shiny as they were when new, they are in great shape and still polish up nicely. The only visible flaws I have seen on the bumpers are a small flake off about ¼ inch in diameter on the left front bumper lower portion and 3 or so tiny bubbles on top of the rear bumper center portion. Neither of these flaws is very noticeable. The auction is scheduled to end October 14th, 2011 at 1 PM Pacific Time, 3PM Central Time, 4PM Eastern and 9PM GMT. I have a clean and clear Oregon Title in my name Serious buyers are welcome to come and test drive the car. I prefer that potential buyers see the car in person. I do my best to describe my cars accurately, but nothing substitutes actually inspecting a car in person.
