Vehicle Detail
1963 Dodge 440 Stationwagon This car was built at the Los Angeles plant and sold new in California where it spent its life until 1989 when it was brought to Washington state. Around this time the car received new two stage paint on the exterior as well as interior and mechanical restoration. The condition of the car today reflects the quality of the restoration, as it held up extremely well for over 20 years, and continues to operate and appear as a fine example of the essence of early 60's style and engineering. Dodge built 26,100 station wagons in 1963 consisting of the 330 and 440 models - of those: 5,400 were six cylinder equipped and 20,700 were V8 cars. Unfortunately, there is no record of how many 440 model wagons were produced with the 383 engine, but it can be safely assumed that there weren't many. The VIN# breaks down as follows: 6 - Make of car = Dodge (8 cyl.)6 - Model of car = Suburban - Medium3 - Year built = 19635 - Assembly plant = Los Angeles123034 - Vehicle sequence number The car still retains its original 383 engine as evidenced by the block stamping: T-38 (T = 1963 | 38 = 383) The engine accessories such as the alternator and power steering pump are original as well and in perfect working order. The mileage reads 14,620 so it can be assumed that the car has 100,000 + miles. The car certainly doesn't seem tired, and the motor still purrs and runs smoothly - nothing mechanical seems excessively worn out when driving the car. The motor and accessories were recently detailed and the 2 barrel carburetor rebuilt. Mopar electronic ignition has been added as an upgrade and to ensure reliability. A 3 core radiator also keeps the engine cool, even under the hottest conditions. Original Torqueflite 3 speed automatic transmission shifts like new and the factory 8.75 rear end is nice and quiet. Power drum brakes stop the car surprisingly well and certainly seem up to the task even after a long battle with rush hour traffic. A factory front sway bar keeps the car well planted in the turns and sure footed, even in a straight line. One of the most noticeable upgrades on this car is the recent rebuild of the power steering gear with upgraded pressure valving, making the steering feel more like that of a modern car. Interior wise, this car embodies early 60's class and style. The color matched red interior is in fantastic shape with new front seat upholstery and foam, as well as new carpet. All door panels are in good shape with only minor abrasion on a few and a small (1/2") tear in the L/H rear panel. The rear cargo area still has it's textured surface and wheel-housing covers intact and in great shape. The headliner has no tears and the dash pad is in excellent shape as well. The radio has been upgraded to an early 70's Mopar factory AM/FM unit that has been fitted to the original 1963 radio bezel and lens. The instruments all work great, including the quartz upgraded clock, and the entire dash cluster has been restored. The steering wheel is intact but showing its age on the backside and has one hairline crack at the 11:00 area. All switches and electrical items work as they should including: wipers, heater, headlights, dome lights, brake lights, back-up lights, turn signals, and power rear window (one of the greatest options to have on a wagon). The vacuum heater switch and heater control valve both work great. Exterior wise, the car is very presentable and the paint still shines. The stainless trim is in nice shape with very little dents, and the grille is in great shape. Front and rear bumpers are showing blisters but still retain a chrome-like appearance. All original emblems are in great shape. The windshield is de-laminating in the corners but has no cracks and is still functional, all other glass is in great shape. There are a few door dings and scrapes that cars pick up over the years, but nothing major. As evidenced in the pictures there is some rust bubbling through the paint on the rear of the quarter panels and rear wheel openings, as well as the bottoms of a few of the doors and the bottom of the tailgate. The cowl area also has rust issues as all of these early b-body cars are prone to, but this doesn't require immediate attention as the cowl has been thoroughly sealed and doesn't leak. I also have a rust free cowl section for this car that is available for an additional fee. The "bones" of this car are exceptionally rust free - rocker panels, floors, inner fenders, trunk extensions are all in great shape. The commonly rusted out spare tire storage area in the rear of the car has had patch panels welded in and thoroughly sealed to restore functionality. This is a very solid and original car with great color combination and engine options. I have no fears of driving this car long distances or at the speeds of modern cars. Over the years this wagon has proven itself to be extremely reliable and a very fun car to own and drive. I have a clean Washington state title in my name for the car Any further questions can be directed to me by e-mail - my e-mail address is: superpanda7@yahoo.com I'm located in the Seattle area, if anyone is interested in seeing the car - I'd be more than happy to show it I will require a $1,000 deposit within 3 days of the auction end via bank transfer or I will re-list the car Full payment will be required within 7 days of the auction end, also via bank transfer or cashiers/certified check Shipping is the sole responsibility of the buyer, i'll do all I can on my end to accommodate the process.
