Vehicle Detail
Up for offer is my matching numbers 1973 Porsche 911T in the original Tangerine orange on tan color scheme with factory sport seats and fog lights. This is the late production 1973 model often referred to as the 1973.5, which has the CIS engine. I purchased the car several years ago from the original owner as a long-term restoration project. The car has since been fully sorted mechanically and requires nothing other than cosmetics. The attractive part of this car is the great motor, which I had re-built to very particular specifications. The engine work was done by Walt Watson at Competition Engineering in Lake Isabella, CA. He is very well known among enthusiast circles as one of the premier Porsche engine people in the country. My requirement for the engine build was to keep the car matching numbers, while increasing the displacement to 2.7 liters and improving performance and reliability. It was also imperative to keep the engine absolutely stock in appearance while viewing it from the outside. I used as many new parts as I possibly could. Otherwise existing parts were expertly handled, machined, powder coated, re-plated, etc. Here are a few highlights of the engine build: - Matching numbers case with original heads - Machined case to increase displacement to 2.7 liters - Installed 2.7 liter/90mm CIS pistons and cylinders - Chamfered heads for the bigger pistons - Honed, bench flowed and powder coated intake risers for improved airflow - Case linebored (standard) - Installed Case Savers - Later oil by-pass modification - New valves, seats and valve springs - 911SC cams for improved performance - Magnaflux and micro-polish crankshaft - Reconditioned rods - Balanced engine - New rings - Reconditioned flywheel And the list goes on. Everything on this engine was done the right way with no expense spared. I have a four page invoice and well over $7000 just for the machining and new parts. I have spent many, many additional thousands of dollars on engine assembly, CIS re-build, parts acquisition, tires, brakes, mechanicals, etc. The work that has gone into this car could not be duplicated for the asking price. Many other improvements were made to the engine, such as: - Completely re-built CIS injection system with increased fuel flow - All new fuel injectors - Installed 911SC 4-rib oil pump modified for higher flow by Henry Schmidt at Supertec - New thermostat - New cam oil lines - Installed oil check valve and pressure relief kits - Installed cam feed restrictors - New oil pressure and temperature senders - New timing chain, gear and chain rails - Turbo valve covers - New 930 Turbo chain tensioners and safety collars were used to maintain the original appearance of the engine, while ensuring reliability Mechanical items unrelated to the engine build include: - New fuel pump, fuel lines, engine/trans mounts, filters, plugs, wires, etc. - New bushings on pedals, coupler and shifter - New master cylinder and brake lines with brake caliper overhaul - New alternator - New clutch, trunion and ring gear - New electrical relays - New engine compartment sound pad - New high torque starter - New oil level sender - Re-built instruments by North Hollywood Speedometer - New Pertronix electronic ignition hidden in original Bosch distributor - Re-built front and rear suspension to include new tie rods, A-arms, bushings, shocks and alignment - Installed newly powder coated oil cooler lines with a higher efficiency brass oil cooler and new mounts Most of the mechanical items were addressed by Tony Gerace at TLG Porsche in North Hollywood, another great and very well-known Porsche shop. I have receipts for all of the above listed work, as well as things I have not listed. Needless to say, the car really hums. The engine is silky smooth and produces great torque. I adhered to a very strict and proper break-in procedure. There are now just over 1000 miles on the motor and the first valve adjustment and oil service using Brad Penn 20w-50 oil has been completed. The engine maintains phenomenal oil pressure and operating temperatures, even on the hottest Southern California days. The only thing left to address are the cosmetics. The paint is about 50 percent original. It looks good from a few feet, but would need to be re-done to bring it up to a very high standard. All of the interior fabric and carpeting are original from new. The brown leatherette is really nice for its age and can be brought up with a little detail work that I have not done, yet. The left bolster in the driver’s sport seat is torn. However, this can be replaced as a section, rather than re-doing the whole seat. There is some surface rust on the battery boxes. Part of this is my fault, as I had an oversize battery in the car for a period after the re-build. The battery tipped over and spilled some fluid in the area. The car now has two brand new, correct batteries that were installed in June. The radio is not original. The rear seats need new padding, but the leatherette is very nice. The dash has the typical crack at the speaker. The carpet is toast and needs a new carpet kit. However, the original rubber carpet backing is still nice, and can be sewn onto the back of the new carpet to maintain originality. The windshield has a crack, but I have been reluctant to replace it because it is the original Sigla glass. The fog light units were replaced with aftermarket at some point. But the car is a factory fog light car and retains the original correct wiring harness and switchwork. All in all, a substantial amount of work and thought has been put into this car. The worst things about it are the carpet, the tear in the driver’s seat and scratches on the left side where someone prior to my ownership became impatient when installing new front fender to body seals. This is a great and hard to find Tangerine on tan color car with matching numbers, factory fogs, and the engine and mechanicals already done by a very discriminating and picky owner. I have extensive service records documenting all of the listed work and then some, as well as the factory issued red book containing the original owner’s manual and service booklet, which is stamped by the servicing dealers and lists the original matching engine and transmission numbers. All that would need to be done to make the car a very good driver for the time being would be to fix the tear in the seat, install a carpet kit, and enjoy as-is. I have a lot of spare parts I’ve collected, such as a full 911S trim package should you prefer that look, spare bumperettes, decals, near-perfect door pockets, door trim panels, and armrests; several sets of H-1 headlights, NOS and near impossible to find Targa seals, etc. These items can be purchased separately by the auction winner if desired (please, no inquiries about purchasing these items unless you win the auction). Over 160 photos are available here, http://photobucket.com/tangerinet to help answer any questions you may have.
