Vehicle Detail

Up for bid is a 1954 MG TF 1250 XPAG with matching numbers (Car#HDB46/3451 Eng# XPAG/TF/33578 Body#13142) . The car is being auctioned without a reserve. There are several other MG TFs currently at auction which have reserves, most show up week after week. If you want to know the true reserve prices go the Hemmings Motor News classified section. Most are listed there at a fixed price. There seems to be a lot of interest in the 1500 model which has nine more horse power and a zero to sixty time improvement over the 1250 of about two seconds. The draw back to the 1500 over the 1250 is the engine. It is the same block as the 1250 except the factory bored it out to the max. The factory does not recommend over boring the 1500 since its already at its limit. Several of the listed cars on eBay are 1500s which have been bored and could have issues if they ever over heated. I purchased this car in 1968 in Miami, Florida. Prior to that it belonged to a doctor who was the first owner and used it in Manila until returning to Miami. When I purchased the car it had about 65,000 miles on the odometer and had just had a total engine rebuild. Hurricane season has arrived and I have moved to a new home on the water so I feel it's time to let her go. The car was restored in 1968 and was my daily driver for a couple of years, then restored again in 1992. It has had all its wood replaced with oak from Moss Motors and all the paint stripped down to bare metal in '92. The paint job is now old and it has a few dings but looks good overall. The custom made fender welt matches the paint but has never been painted. The brakes were rebuilt in 2007 with new shoes, wheel cylinders, and silicon fluid. The master cylinder was sleeved by White-Post Restoration of Virginia. The rear leaf springs have been replaced with new ones in 1992. The wheels are 60 spoke chrome Dunlap wires. The tires were new in 1992 and probably have less than 100 miles on them. They don't show any sign of deterioration. The rear wheel splines were replaced in 1992 with new ones. The top is tan Hartz cloth purchased from Moss. The seat upholstery is tan and was done in 1968 by an excellent restoration shop in Miami. The carpets and the the interior were redone in '92. The car has never had any major mechanical problems nor has it ever left me stranded, just the typical MG and Lucas prince of darkness issues. The tachometer works, but clicks. The temp gauge never has worked but the car has always run cool. The oil pressure has always been good but I noticed last week the gauge is stuck. The clock has never worked. The carburetors were sent to Apple Hydraulics rebuilt and re-bushed and that has made a major improvement in the cars idle and overall performance. The Vokes air filter housings are equipped with K&N filter elements. The side curtains are original and match the top, they have had new window plastic installed, and look great. The king dick jack, knock off hammer and most of the tool kit items are in the tool box. The chrome overall is very nice, some is new. The steering wheel is a new, original factory BMC wheel I purchased back in 1968 and didn't install until 2002. The only non-original items on the car are its non-factory radio and Ferrari head lights. I purchased a Euro 308 GTS Ferrari in 1980 and the Department of Transportation required I replace the halogen lights that were original with seal beams to meet the US specifications. So, I removed the seal beams from the MG and replaced its head lights with the halogens from the Ferrari. If you notice the tag in the pictures, it is from 1992, which is the last time the car was legally on the road. I drive it around the neighborhood occasionally. We never really own old cars like this but are just caretakers. If you want to be the next caretaker of a nice old MG this might be the one for you. Thanks for looking and have a great day!!!
