It has been said that it may look like the illegitimate love child of a corrugated shipping container and a dumpster, but the VW Thing was in fact the resurrection of a German military vehicle known as the Kbelwagen. (Kbel meaning bucket & wagen meaning car). VW's convertible breadbox was called the Thing only in North America, where it went on sale in 1973. It was known elsewhere as the Trekker, Safari, or simply the Type 181. The Thing was built on the pre 1968 Microbus chassis and was powered by VW's air-cooled 1600-cc dual port flat four cylinder. A four speed manual was the only transmission available. The winshield folds down and the windows and doors easily remove. 59,500 miles! With new top and windows. Runs great and turns heads wherever it goes. Car is very clean. No visible rust and a decent paint job. This 1973 Volkswagen "Thing" Convertible is extremely fun to drive. The ultimate "Fun in the Sun" wagon. The exterior is white with matching white interior and new black soft top. Things in this shape are hard to find. Everything works as it should. It looks great and gets great looks.
