Vehicle Detail

1966 Porsche 912 This car is in excellent condition. It has the Original Engine and Transmission, numbers match Porsche number range. 25,977 Original miles. We pulled a Carfax recently to verify this is correct. The car has a flat 4 Cylinder engine; we are told this is the same running gear as the 356 SS. The transmission is 5 speed. The brakes are in excellent shape, 4 wheel disc brakes, hydraulic. State of the art for 1966. This car has been stored for 21 years. Our family purchased the car in 1989 in SLC with the intention as a weekend fun car. The car came from California. We always wanted a Red Porsche, so we decided to have the car repainted (big dollar project). The car was stripped down to bare metal and (no dents or rust). We chose “Guards Red” or India Red, Paint # G8G8 Color Code: 027-9-2. This was repainted with Sikkens paint, base coat / clear coat system. The paint job alone was over $4000.00 in 1990. While we had the vehicle at the shop we looked at the condition of the interior parts, rubber and chrome exterior parts and optioned to update everything to look like new. At the time the best place we could find parts was a company called Tweeks. We purchased a substantial amount of new products for the car. The list included: Exterior Items: New Porsche Hood Insignia New PORSCHE Lettering for rear deck lid. New Windshield Rubber New Rear Glass Rubber New Driver and Passenger rolling glass rubber seals. Engine Compartment Shroud Rubber Driver & Passenger Door rubber seal. New Front Trunk Rubber Seals (4 parts) New Deco Molding for Front bumper, driver and passenger running boards, and rear bumper segments. New OEM Driver’s Door rear view mirror (it was cheaper than rechroming) Hershmen Radio Antenna Headlamp rubber seals New headlamp glass. We optioned to have the following parts redipped in Chrome: Front Horn Grilles (2) Driver & Passenger Door Chrome. Rear Engine Lid Chrome. Front Head Light Trim Other body items: Both closing mechanism for the doors were replaced with new parts so the doors would operate properly. Interior Items: New Interior Carpet Kit (the old carpet kit was showing some wear) New Head Liner New Trunk Carpet Kit Blaupunkt Stereo Cassette Player, high end for 1989. Total invested in paint, parts and labor by the end of 1990 was $9876.00 plus $8700.00 we paid for the car. Other Interior notes: The upholstery still looks very good, it is factory original. We found a couple of items that were not original, when we did some research. Upon doing some research we discovered the prior owner had used Aluminum Rims from the 1970’s vintage Porsche 911’s. We liked the look, so we kept them. They are more expensive than the original rims, so the value is there. Also the Original Steering wheel was replaced we believe with a Wood Nardi steering wheel of the 1964 vintage that was used on the 356’s. Again, we liked the steering wheel; it gave the interior a classic look. The previous owner replaced the Solex Carburetors with Delorto Down Draft style racing carburetors. We took the car to a Porsche Mechanic in 1991 and he suggested we replace the carburetors with Weber Down Drafts. We took the suggestion and had them install new Weber carbs. We have kept the old carburetors in case we wanted to use them in the future; these are included in this sale. The car stayed parked in the garage with a couple of Sunday cruises during the summer months until 1995. We had 2 kids and that changed the picture for us. We never registered the car again and the car stayed parked in the garage until 2005. In 2005 we moved to Pennsylvania and had the car moved with us. After the move we finally decided to let go of our Porsche. It had been a decade since we started the care. Upon coming to PA we had the car looked at by a local mechanic to get it running again. The battery needed to be replaced and the gas tank needed to be drained and fuel system flushed. While in the shop the Mechanic suggested the tank be addressed since there was rust discovered. He suggested the tank be removed and reconditioned and carburetors removed and fully serviced to remove any rust particles. We had this work completed, this was another $1500.00. The tank was reconditioned and lined with a silver tank coating, I saw the tank while removed, very high quality work, and rust will never be an issue again with this tank. After I heard our Porsche run again, I could not part with her. I have started her every week or so since 2005. I still have not registered the vehicle, all the same reasons why I did not use the car through the years is still true. We have 2 kids and need a SUV sized vehicle to get our bikes and other sports gear from point to point. We are very active, and this car is too small to haul the stuff. I would love to have the time to just go cruise around in this car, but family schedules and actives prevents this from happening. So here we are, 21 years later, we are selling our family heirloom vehicle. We would like to see it go to someone who truly appreciates this vehicle and will enjoy the car. The current condition of the car is excellent. The exterior and interior is beautiful. Mechanically I am unaware of any needed repairs, everything works great. There are little details that I would like to spend money on to make look new (I would love to have the dash updated to a wood style to match the beautiful Nardi steering wheel), but I have resisted spending more money to further update. My wife and I love the car and would love to keep it. It should pass a State inspection in most states no problem. The car was originally not outfitted with any type of emissions control by modern standards. There is not a catalytic converter on these old Porsches. I am not sure what your local emissions standards are, but most states exempt these old cars and emissions outputs are not important due to the age of the vehicle.
