Vehicle Detail

This Explorer was bought brand new in 1990 by the Sarasota Bradenton Airport Authority. It appears to have served as a security vehicle until 2008 when it was sold to an older man. The older man was never able to afford to put it on the road so it sat for a few years. To my understanding, it rarely if ever left the airport property when they owned it. It's an XL model with vinyl front seats and a cloth rear seat. It does have power windows, locks, cruise, tilt and full carpet just like a XLT would. This Explorer was very well maintained and has only 84761 miles on it. Here's a step by step walk through of it..... Exterior The paint is all original and is single stage white. It's a little thin in a couple of places and has some scratches here and there but for 20 years old it looks great. 99% rust free with only a little on the core support and on the roof drain rails, it all very minor surface rust from being so close to Sarasota Bay for many years. The tires are in great condition, the alloy wheels are a little scuffed and faded but are serviceable and presentable. All lights work and doors close nice and tight with no slop in the hinges. It has some old window tint that needs peeled off and redone. Overall, it's a strong 7 out of 10. Mechanically The engine starts right up and runs tight and smooth. The transmission shifts perfectly, the 4x4 works perfectly in both high and low range with the push buttons. I installed a brand new AC compressor, accumulator, manifold AC hose, orifice tube, pulled a vacuum and recharged and converted to R-134A. It will freeze you out of it. I also installed a new fuel pump, plugs, wires, fuel filter, return PS hose, and did a tranny service, coolant flush and oil change. It runs like a top. The brakes work very well, no rotor warpage and plenty of life left on the linings. Overall, it's a 9 out of 10. Interior The carpet is faded some but it's clean, the rear seat is almost perfect, the console and armrest are perfect. The front vinyl seats are in great condition with some minor seam separation on the drivers seat. The headliner has a few small rips in it but it's presentable. The dashboard has some cracking from the sun, but none that can be seen while sitting the front seats. It has a nice Sony AM/FM CD with Sat capability and aux input for an iPod. There are a few cracks in the drivers door panel and some signs of wear and tear but nothing serious. Overall it's a 7.5 out of 10 Overall The only things that do not function on this Explorer are the cruise control (I suspect the vacuum servo) and the rear hatch lock doesn't lock (needs a new actuator). Everything else works as it should including all of the gauges, climate control, 4x4, power windows, passenger door locks, power mirrors, etc. It has all of the original books, keys, and the sales receipt from Charlotte County Ford in Pt. Charlotte Florida as purchase by the Sarasota Bradenton Airport Authority. It is 100% ready to go, you could fly in and drive it anywhere in the country. Overall I would rate this a 8 out of 10. This Explorer has a lot of life left in it and would make a great winter car for you northerners that need a ride back and forth to work in the winter that isn't rotted out. At 20 years old, it's a classic Explorer, without all of the complicated electronics and one of the best engines Ford ever made. If I could, I would keep it for myself. It's that good!
