Vehicle Detail
I purchased this Velocette from the original owner in 2001. After sitting in my garage for many years I undertook its restoration. The engine was sent off to Dave Smith Classic Motorcycles for a complete rebuild and upgrade to partial Thruxton specification. Dave went through every component of the engine and replaced/repaired everything that was out of tolerance. New 0.020 over, 9:1 compression pistons were installed after the cylinder was NiCom plated and bored. New valves, guides and seats were installed and the hairpin springs were replaced with coil springs. The cam followers were refaced and the pushrods were replaced. The crankshaft was repaired/replaced to bring it into tolerance. The head was converted to dual spark plugs and the inlet was ported and polished for a 32 mm Amal carb (Thruxton spec). Dave also machined the timing cover and added the tachometer drive. He converted the ignition to electronics and added a 12 volt Alton alternator. Total cost of the work done by Dave was $5000. Receipts, emails and pictures of the rebuild are available to the purchaser to document the work done. I maintained as many of the original parts as possible during the rebuild. The wheels are original Dunlops and the shocks and forks are rebuilt originals. The gearbox is the original and works perfectly. The gas tank, oil tank, number plate, tail light, head light, primary drive case, alternator drive belt case, chain guard and tool box are also original to the bike as is the speedometer. I added the correct tachometer and had both the tach and speedo rebuilt and then mounted them on Thruxton brackets. The Rickman Avon style fairing is from Airtech with Gustafsson screens. The rear chain and sprockets were replaced. The chrome fenders and mounting brackets are original and were replated. The seat, exhaust pipe, muffler, battery box, ace cafe handlebars, and all the misc. odd bits were purchased from Grove Classic Motorcycles, Ltd. in the UK. The controls and switches are original to the bike. The 32 mm carb with manual choke was purchased new from Walridge in Canada. The tanks and fairing are painted with Jaguar British Racing Green (1982 Metallic) and the other painted parts are non-metallic BRG. This bike is awesome to ride. It starts on the second or third kick from cold. It has a smooth idle and excellent acceleration. There are NO issues whatsoever with this Velocette. You will be hard pressed to find a nicer example of this marque. NOT BSA, Triumph, Norton, Matchless, Vincent
