Vehicle Detail
1928 Chrysler Series 52 Roadster, with Rumble Seat. Burgundy with Black Fenders and Tan Leather Interior. VERY RARE. 39,310 original miles (believed to be correct.) We purchased this car in April, 1986 from Scottsdale Classic Imports in Scottsdale, AZ for the purchase price of $7,500. We were told that it was a two owner car, having originally come from the estate of the original owner, who lived in Arizona. They believed the mileage to be correct, but they had no way to document that fact. It wears Arizona Historic Vehicle plates from 1977. During the 25 years we have owned the car, it has been stored in a heated garage, and driven periodically through summer months. The car is currently running, and is a reliable driver. It drives beautifully! We have driven it in parades, and during summer months we exercise it around the 5 mile square in the rural area where we live. This car has historical significance. It was the FIRST year of hydraulic brakes for Chrysler Motor Cars. There is a brake fluid reservoir on the firewall of the driver’s side. Before you drive the car, you unscrew a spring-loaded plunger in the top of the reservoir, and “pump” up the brakes in order to create pressure and a firm brake pedal. The wood and metal are in OUTSTANDING condition. There is absolutely zero rot or decay of the floorboards. They are amazing, and actually look like new! And there is absolutely zero rust anywhere in or under the steel fenders or other metal assembly. The undercarriage is clean and rust free, as the photos show. This car obviously spent all of its years (before we purchased it) in Arizona. The car has been preserved remarkably. It is all there, with the exception of only two pieces: (1) chrome end caps where the wooden bow for the top ends on both sides, and (2) chrome wing nuts where the top attaches to the front windshield frame. Other than those two pieces, EVERYTHING is there. For the last 25 years, we have watched Hemmings, the auctions, and various other old car venues for another 1928 Chrysler Series 52 Roadster. We have NEVER seen another. This leads us to believe that there may not be any/many others around. Our original plan for this car was to convert it to a Hot Rod. We were going to drop it on a tube frame with a blown 426 Hemi. However, when we learned how rare this car is, and began to appreciate how well preserved it is, we just couldn’t cut it up. That being said, it would make an EXCELLENT all steel hot rod. And a RARE on at that!! Would be beautiful with a Hemi engine. If you do plan on keeping the car original, we have the “Instruction Book” that came with the car. It provides excellent detail on maintaining the car. There is a metal plate located on the floor just inside the driver’s door that shows the number: “R-5848-1.” Whether you choose to enjoy this car “as-is,” or convert it to a Hot Rod, it will serve you well. And one thing is for you: You will have the only around! Thank you.
