Vehicle Detail

1970 Karmann Ghia Convertible Car is in very good overall condition. Triple Black with Camel seats. Fully functional, very dependable, always maintained and kept clean to a high degree. An absolute blast to drive. Same Adult owner last 11 years. Gets tons of attention everywhere it goes. Here is a short video of the car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OfFYl1VpuQ Mechanically the car is very stable and was built to be an economical cruiser. All stock 1600 cc motor was completely rebuilt less than 20,000 miles ago by a recognized local air cooled VW specialist. At the same time the entire driveline was gone through to assure dependability, Transaxle was exchanged, New complete clutch kit, New rear axle bearings, CV joints, New exhaust, etc. Within the last 6 months car has had a complete tune up including valve adjustment and a complete ignition system overhaul including New “Hot Spark” distributor with high energy electronic ignition, New “Hot Spark” coil, wires, etc. Engine compartment is clean and mildly detailed for show. Car runs exceptionally well, is very dependable and averages 28 MPG around town, no highway. This is one of the very few true classics that are economical to operate and maintain. Entire electrical system and all the lights work correctly without issue with exception to the clock. All wiring is neat & organized with no loose, dangling or excess “wads” of wires. Entire brake system was been gone through during my ownership and included New upgraded front Disc calipers, New wheel bearings, etc. with a New Master Brake Cylinder and front metal brake lines about 4 months ago. Car brakes straight and smooth. Front suspension has been lowered via a “threaded rod” type system that allows unlimited ride height adjustability so you can fine tune to exactly what is desired. I have it set as low as possible without major rubbing with the current tire/rim set up. I also had the ball joints replaced with the installation of this system. It works great. The rear is stock height but as these cars are disproportionately low in the back, it levels out nicely. The car honestly handles and feels just like a large Go-cart. Floor pans have been replaced with two solid, flat sheets of steel instead of the thin, tin foil aftermarket replacement floor pan sections. It may not be pretty, but it IS very sturdy and adds the much needed rigidity to the car that the convertible models need. The heat levers and channels operate and provide heat through the floor vent slots. Underside has been treated with spray on rubberized undercoating. Exterior is solid Black and was painted/wet sanded/polished about 10 years ago. The bumpers and ALL the trim was removed prior to paint, cleaned/polished and reassembled with new rubber gaskets. All the bumper components were completely disassembled, re-plated and reassembled with new rubber gaskets. The bumpers are straight and show very well with one small area of slight damage. The front override bar and the right front push bar each have a small dent. These individual pieces are now available new therefore not dictating replacement of the entire bumper. The paint itself is very slick and shiny and has always been garaged in a climate controlled basement but is definitely NOT perfect. After 10 years, previous body/prep work is starting to show and it has picked up a few abrasions, the worst being some paint cracks/chips at the top of the front wheel wells and a small dent on the front. It’s low on the nose though and usually goes unnoticed. These spots have been touched up and the car still presents its self very well at local cruises/car shows. “It’s an excellent 10 footer” is the best way I can describe the overall exterior. Top is stock style Vinyl with the original glass, fold down rear window. I’m surprised how many of these Ghia’s have had the glass discarded and replaced with plastic, which I despise. The window has the drain tubes that are fully functional. All the insulation and inside lining is present and looks very good. The latches and the frame are all in-tact and function. Most people at the cruises comment that the top must be new but it’s definitely not, it just looks that way. It’s always kept treated with vinyl protectant and lives in a climate controlled garage when not in use. It has a few small “pinch” breaks in the vinyl on the left side that have been sealed and aren’t really that noticeable unless pointed out. Doors, hood, trunk & gas door all shut well and latch. Windows roll up and down as they should. Hard to find back glass is excellent. Windshield is old and has one small “starburst” chip that has been the same my entire ownership. Weather stripping is all present and in-tact with the door and trunk stripping being new after the car was painted. Rims are the vintage Porsche style with the polished lip and 5 spoke hub. They are all in excellent condition and appear to have never touched a curb. I didn’t care for the black spokes with the goofy little polished squares on them so I painted the spokes textured aluminum that matches the steering wheel spokes. Center caps and lugs are all excellent. Tires are 195-50-15 and are all very good. Interior is Very Nice and gets allot of compliments at cruises/car shows. Prior to my ownership, the entire interior was re-done by hand with soft, black leather look vinyl and is in very nice condition. Door panels with storage pockets, dash pad, dash face, glove box door, etc all match and are neatly done. I always wanted Camel seats so a couple of years ago I installed original style seat and head rest covers that fit as they should and appear brand new. All the latches, knobs, levers, etc are present and work. Stereo sounds very good and consists of a Kenwood high power single CD/Stereo head unit with Pioneer extra bass multi-port speakers in their own enclosure mounted under the dash. I will pass along my entire file that contains information, notes, manuals, maintenance log and EVERY receipt for all the work that has been done to the car over the past 11 years. The file is also accompanied by the California title issued to the previous owner on August 8, 1993. I have set the reserve at a very reasonable amount as my intent is to sell the car, not toy with people. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time, for any reason. I will need a $1000 deposit within 24 hours of auction end to confirm the sale. I am selling off most of the collectable cars that I have accumulated over the years as I am just getting older and trying to slow down a bit. This is one of the coolest little cruisers I have ever owned and gets as many inquiries as any of my much higher dollar Rods. I hate to see it go. Thanks for your interest and happy bidding!
