Vehicle Detail
Up for Auction!! My 59 VW Type 2 Single cab dropside pickup. I just had a new baby, and I need to pay some bills! I purchased this in 2007, height of the car market, my reserve is less than a 1/3 what this was bought for, my loss, your gain, buy in the best market for old cars in years!!! This was purchased from a man in washington state, west coast car, I have a copy of the original title to prove it. I will describe this truck in detail, I will tell you the good, bad, and ugly, I am not hiding anything, my integrity is worth more than an extra grand on an auction, you will be able to bid with confidence, knowing your getting exactly what was described. The Good: This is a fun, unique, rare VW. Not your typical bus or pickup! This is the early version, split window, type 2, more desirable than the newer late 60's and 70's models. It turns heads, and won a first place trophy for splitwindow buses in the one VW car show it was at. This vehicle has a few interesting features, the sides and tailgate all fold down to access the bed, it has the optional sunvisor, dome light, under dash storage tray, interior and exterior mirrors, spare tire, church key and holder (access key to get into engine compartment, gas door, and treasure chest), sapphire V AM radio, 12 Volt generator, single door treasure chest under bed storage, original storage chest dividers, new gas tank and reserve valve. This has a 4 cyl air cooled VW engine, 4 speed manual transmission, luxuriously appointed instrument panel (one speedometer, one generator idiot light, one oil pressure idiot light, and that is it!) (to determine fuel level, the VW engineers came up with a reserve gas valve (present, not hooked up), that you open when you run out of fuel and you get about 2 gallons to get to the gas station), engine air heater, electric wipers, turn signals and a horn. The engine runs great, starts everytime. The transmission shifts smoothly, no problems. This vehicle drives nicely, maximum comfortable speed is 55, fun and easy to drive. the manual steering is tight and easy to turn, brakes work great, all lights, turn signals, horn, and wipers work perfectly. Tires are the original size 14", decent tread, some weather checking, but perfectly serviceable. I installed a new interior, seat is black cloth, new ivory steering wheel and knobs, all vent windows and sliders function. It appears that new rubber window and door seals were installed as they aren't all covered in paint. Engine air powered heater works great, defrost works, very basic, but does keep you warm driving back from the car show or drive in on a colder night! The bed has a hand applied bed liner material, black, done by previous owner, not my first choice, but bed is solid underneath. The paint is blue and white, with a silver/grey interior panels. The Bad! The engine has a oil leak from the front, I feel it is the front main, but am not sure, leaks mostly when engine is warm and has been driven, not enough to effect driveability. Radio turns on and lights up, but no sound comes out. The treasure chest hold-open latch is missing, same as a bus engine latch, so easy to get. The brakes work great, but due to drum/shoe/semi-metallic design, squeak occasionally when applied. The Ugly! The body has had some replaement panels welded on it, so no rust through is present, but there is bondo over the welds, and bondo on the drop gate sides where they were dented by carrying loads back in the day. The paint job is older, and has scratches, dings, chips, and some surface rust by the front window on the dash where water came through the windshield seal that wasn't polyurethaned when installed. The truck looks very nice, certainly a driveable vehicle that is ready for a local car show, but to be perfect, it would need a professional repaint, to give it an outstanding appearance. The glass is all decent, original, german marked, but the windshield glass on the driver's side has a chip and the passenger's windshield glass has some delamination, nothing serious. Overall this is a great rare truck, fun and easy to drive, put the key in and go, starts and runs great, and turns heads everywhere it goes. Mike from american pickers has one like this he drives around on the show on history channel!
