After exhaustively documenting every number on the car that could be found, I am convinced the mileage on the odometer is real. The fiberglass is spectacular and the paint is knockout but I need not try to convince anyone of this incredible Corvette's authenticity. Rather, I will present the facts as I found them and allow you to decide. Below are the production dates of every part that could be found with a number. (that could be decoded) I used the 2nd edition of the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) 1978-1979 Corvette Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide for most of my research. The few items that could not be traced to the car originally were accounted for during a conversation with the previous owner. This young man believed his newly acquired Corvette had great value and to prepare it for sale, took his prize to the local Chevrolet dealership. Apparently, after over thirty years in storage the only problems that needed correcting were the upper radiator hose, v-belts, air filter and the brake pads. Additionally, the radiator was removed/reconditioned and the fuel tank was dropped, drained and reinstalled. We were also able to gain an incomplete story from him of how this 1978 Corvette came to have so few miles and be in such astonishing condition. The car was purchased new by a dealer "back east" and stored for about six years. If you are familiar with the mania that surrounded anticipated 1978 Corvette future collectability at that time, this not at all unlikely. A lady in Idaho became aware of this low mileage Corvette that was in storage at a dealership, negotiated the purchase and had it transported to her location. The car fit her odd scheme of owning a collection of Corvettes, each matching the birth year of her grandchildren. The unbequeathed grandchild born in 1978 may or may not have known about a Corvette dedicated to his or her birth, or even cared. There was a nephew however, that did care. He grew up hearing his family speculate wildly about grandma's Corvette. What condition was it in? What was its value? Who would get it? As a teenager he dreamed of someday owning this 25th Anniversary specimen that sat all these decades untouched and un-enjoyed. As grandma's recollections began to dim, she at last assigned the care and keeping of her long held treasure to her nephew. It was amazing how little was needed to make this time capsule road worthy. The fuel tank was dropped and emptied, the radiator pulled and serviced, new brake pads, a new battery and the old girl fired right up. If a person were to judge this museum worthy Corvette using NCRS standards, it would almost certainly earn the "Chevrolet Bowtie Award for original, unrestored Corvettes. An all original car such as this should be preserved to document accurately how Corvettes from this era really left the factory. Like it or not, this car represents the true state of Corvette production quality, circa 1978. Fastback styling was new for 1978 and still looks knockout on this well preserved original. Among Corvettes from this high production period, 1978 stands separate and above in collectability. (and this Anniversary Edition gem stands above any original '78 Corvette you will ever find) Overall vehicle condition is almost beyond belief with great paint, superb fiberglass and beautiful exterior trim. The media darling in 1978 of course, was the Pace Car Edition but collectors have demonstrated a marked preference for the clean styled Silver Anniversary Edition. items possibly not original (that we found) battery air filter oil filter upper radiator hose upper heater hose fan/alternator/power steering/AIR pump belts interior light fuse left/rear center wheel cap original radiator was pulled and serviced original fuel tank was dropped, emptied and reinstalled Among the 46,776 Corvettes produced for 1978, just 12,739 had the more powerful L-82 engine. Mahogany leather interior is absolutely stunning. Leather upholstery, carpet, door panels and dash pad are all in spectacular condition. 1,812 original miles with documented condition to match.
