It has not been for sale since the second owners purchased it in 1976. A friend of ours spotted this bus around 1999, then it took several years for us to finally convince the second owners to sell it to us in 2003. We have owned and loved it ever since! We even have the original jack, tool kit and owners manual! From the time we purchase it, we went through it mechanically but never really did much cosmetically. We put the restoration plans on hold and enjoyed it as we found it. It's so solid & usable as-is, we knew we'd be reluctant to drive it after restoration for fear of damage. We always liked not worrying about parking lot dings and scratches. We did have the front seats re-upholstered in the correct, factory OEM-style material. We also replaced the sunroof cover and guides. The sunroof opens & closes with ease. We had the transaxle completely rebuilt with all new bearings and syncros in the gearbox as well as in the reduction boxes. At that time, we also had it upgraded to a 4:12 ring/pinion for more freeway gear ratios, as well as adding a 12-Volt case, updated mainshaft and 8-bolt differential. There is less than 5,000 miles on the transaxle. The engine came next: balanced 1600cc single-port with new magnesium crankcase, new heads and all new internals. This top-notch engine build was done by Morris Race Engines. The brakes and shocks were replaced as well. The wheels and bumpers have been restored and painted the correct silver beige color. The bus has new Yokohama "super van 356" light truck/van tires. less than 4,000 miles on the engine (we have a log book and records). As you will see in the pictures, this is a really solid bus; sunroof buses in general are very rust-prone. Luckily this bus has been spared. It has very little rust. As you can see, it could use a passenger cargo door rocker (this is the first place to go on split buses) and some very minor front floor rust. The battery floors and rear corners are amazingly 100% rust free! One of the best features of this bus is the roof, rust free! The gutters are pristine. Skylight holes are rock solid. Even the headliner clips are solid! At some point, the previous owner started doing a camper conversion and got as far as cutting a hole in the driver's side cargo floor and belly pan for a sink drain. You can see the hole in the pictures, it is cut out, it's not rust. Thankfully, the previous owner lost interest in the camper idea and never got further than that. It appears that the nose skin (just the skin) was replaced at some point, I would guess in the early 70's. Repair metal included in this sale: complete new WW front floor, Klassic fab outer rocker for below cargo doors, outer cargo floor edge and original metal for the cargo floor drain hole and belly pan section.
