Vehicle Detail
BEAUTIFUL RALLY RED 1968 FIREBIRD 400 V/8! Though I have owned several Muscle Cars in my life. I have yet to own one that I have enjoyed as much as this particular Pontiac Firebird! I actually found out about this car around a year ago. A friend of mine told me about a guy who contemplated selling a Muscle Car that he had owned for 28 years {title still shows 1981 registration}! I asked my friend to give me the gentleman’s contact information so I could get in touch with him. After contacting the owner he told me that he decided it was time to sale the car. Mainly because of his lack of use of it & other financial obligations. After several phone conversations we set up a time for me to stop by so I could inspect it. Upon arrival I found that the car was in better shape then I expected it to be since it wasn’t being used regularly! After he cranked the key over the big block 400 fired up immediately! The car really seemed to breathe well & run consistent at an idle. I was informed that he ordered the block from Butler Performance. The motor {approx. $4,600} has ported valves, main studs, eagle rods & is internally balanced and manufactured by blueprint! It is an estimated 425 horsepower motor which is more than enough for a old guy like me. The car was a factory high h.p 350 vehicle. The motor doesn’t ever seem to miss a beat & there are no fluids leaking. The car itself is an actual 105xxx mile vehicle which is very low mileage for a car this age! After I purchased the car I immediately replaced the original mufflers with two chamber Flow Masters. The rumble of the new exhaust system sounds incredible {very deep throaty rumble}! This Firebird is a BLAST to drive! The turbo 400 transmission engages effortlessly & pulls extremely hard. That being said the car has highway gears so it cruises at 70 mph plus. *After driving the car for about a month or so I noticed that it seemed to develop a small leak on my garage floor. I later determined that it was transmission fluid so I had it professionally rebuilt. The complete drive train of this Firebird is in superb condition*! {I do have a receipt for the rebuild}. In my quest to make this vehicle a top notch muscle car I replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor and other misc parts. Also replaced were the alternator, starter, belts & all hoses. The two core radiator also seemed to be in great shape & it was certainly cooling properly, however I replaced it with a high capacity 3 core new one {much better}. This one can be driven anywhere….. top performance & constant reliability! My goal was to make this Firebird a Muscle car that could be driven daily. I replaced the original Quadra junk carburetor with a brand new Edlebrock 650 with electric choke. It made a substantial difference & it also seems to run much better than before. The body is really in great shape. The car was kept in a heated garage throughout the lion share of his ownership {28 plus years}. All of the panels are solid & original to the car {outside of the rear quarters} which he had replaced. The floors, trunk and underbody were really well protected from the elements so the car is structurally sound. A short time later I decided that it was time to have the car painted. It was red when I purchased it, however the paint was less than stellar. I chose a brighter Rally Red color that looks great & is near blinding at times. It really seems to catch everyone’s attention whether this Bird is moving or standing still {the paint job turned out great}! All of the chrome is in great shape and really helps compliment the exterior. I purchased a quality new OEM rear bumper & had it installed. I purchased two brand new O.E.M. front grills for the car that are still in the box. I never got around to installing them so they are included with the sale of the car. All of the original glass is in excellent condition. The front windshield had a hair line crack in it so I had it replaced/professionally installed {receipts included}. This first generation Bird has all new upholstery that looks awesome! I had new seat covers, carpet, headliner, door panels, quarter skin covers, ash tray molding covers, sun visors, rear window trim, front windshield trim, rear deck base, dome light, sail panels, a pillar molding, window cranks, and almost every other single interior component that you can think of installed {there is a litany of receipts for the car}. The vinyl top is still in great shape for its age and is believed to be original. One of the few factory vinyl tops that I have seen without rust bubbles underneath. All new dash bezels, turn signal indicator, turn signal lever, shift plate, brake release level, gas pedal, brake pedal, rear fuel door emblem & too much more to list come with this one {the bezels and the other items are still wrapped & ready to be installed}. I had all of the weather stripping replaced as well. The factory PMD wheels have been completely refurbished. They are in great shape and so are the center caps/beauty rings. The wide track performance Cooper Cobra raised white letter radials are basically new as well. This one also has new chrome Eldebrock valve covers & air cleaner. All & all this Firebird is an affordable /awesome classic car that is a true pleasure to own! You don’t see 1968 Firebirds that often….definitely a cure for the common Muscle car. This one really commands attention each & every time that it hits the open road! Not a 10 point show car, but someone could easily take it to that next level. At a later date dying the top would be grand {my perspective….I am extremely picky}. This may be a great Christmas gift for that someone special or yourself. Definitely a wise reasonably priced investment that is certain to appreciate. Serious inquires only please! No trades, no tire kicking, no low ball offers.
