Over 50 Pictures and 3 Videos of this car - Just scroll down! Hello eBayers, I know there is a lot of writing and info here, but please take the time to read it. I have always given an in-depth description of the cars I sell on eBay. I find that buyer appreciate this. If there is something I haven't covered, please let me know and contact me. The blue book on this car is between $8,000 and $8,700 according to NADA.com. I had listed it on ebay with a Buy it now price of $7500. I removed the buy it now because I have had bad experiences with scammers pushing the buy it now button and trying to send a fake cashier's check. The $7500 is worth every penny to me. I know that I can't find another car like this. Still, I am listing it as an absolute auction, no reserve. I have done this in the past, and I find that the law of supply and demand take over and USUALLY the right price is met. Plus, I've been reimbursed for letting Arcade Fire and Spike Jonze use this car in their movie, so I'm a little more comfortable with this situation. 1979 Mercedes 280se a true Euro model, imported from Germany many years ago, and recently featured in the new Arcade Fire movie directed by Spike Jonze, to be released very soon, I am unsure of the exact name of the movie, but this car was filmed with the band in a flick about friends and falling apart, as I understand, in Austin TX. - my hometown. Anyway, you are bidding on my pride and joy - This, along with a 1977 Datsun 280z, is the last of my beloved vehicular possessions that I need to sell. I keep her in the garage, air conditioned and happy. I have hung onto her as long as I can, and I am currently in the process of moving overseas - I unfortunately have to sell her. My first car was a gorgeous 1973 450se, and it doesn't hold a candle to this one. I'm a car fanatic, and love oddball 60s 70s and 80s cars. I have sold several of my cars through eBay, getting ready to move, all with positive feedback. These include several Mercedes 300 Diesels, a VW Westfalia, a v12 Jaguar convertible, a Datsun Fairlady Roadster, a Volvo 262 Bertone, and some others. You can be certain you are getting all the info that I have on the car you are bidding on, and I disclose everything to the best of my knowledge. The good, the neutral, the things that may need help, the history, it is all here, nothing is being hidden or not disclosed. If there is something that you would like to know, please call me at (512) 588-3492 or send me an email. You may get a quicker response by calling me. I would like to mention, please do not bid on this item if you are not wanting to follow through. As you may know, eBay ads cost money, $120 to be exact, and I do need to sell this car in a timely manner for my move. She is worth every penny, and has a remarkable history. As I mentioned before, she was imported from Germany and is a true euro model. Flush bumpers, manual windows, never had A/C from the factory! This is a one of a kind, beautiful automobile that turns heads wherever she goes. Low miles, absolutely spectacular interior, with tons of life left, no stains, with not even the slightest indication of worn plastics or stiffening, she is in extremely good shape and is amazingly clean, superb condition inside. Interior: What can I say? The pictures look great, but seriously don't do her justice. This car is clean, clean, clean. The carpet is like brand new, No dirt or dust in the crevices, no funk on the steering wheel, absoultely spotless. I can't give her anything but a 9.5 out of 10. The only thing I see is that the previous owner stuck the driver's side interior door cloth to the frame with some glue that is semi-visible. The passenger side door cloth is slightly sagging, it just needs to be glued down or clipped better. The seats are nice and springy, the cloth is full of color, not faded, and the headliner, dash and sun visors are perfect. The wood in the center console is curled up in some spots, but the wood elsewhere is just great, not one indication of problems there. The sunroof opens and closes exactly as it should, smoothly and reliably. The alternative band Arcade Fire has used this car extensively in their new movie, directed by Spike Jonze, in Austin, TX. A simple Google search will let you know more about this. The band rented the car and used it in their movie, a story about friends and falling apart, I hear. I'm not sure exactly when this movie will be released, but the car was loaned out in the middle of this year. The movie should be out soon, and when it is, I'm guessing the car's value will go up. Engine/Drivetrain: This car starts up first time every time, the fuel injected straight 6 purrs smoothly, and the transmission shifts just like it should, with no slips or problems. It is a tremendously healthy running car, temperature gauge always stays below halfway, the oil pressure is well within range (the oil gauge only shows 2 bar out of 3 when being driven, but I had the oil pressure checked by a mechanic with his gauge, and it is great. JP Mercedes in Austin, TX. says that the oil gauge is faulty and only registers up to 2 bars. He says gunk building up in the gauge is to blame, and that it is a common issue with cars like this that don't have a electronic sending unit. This one has a line straight to the oil pump, and this is why I want to leave it alone. I would rather not disturb a line like that by trying to open it up, fix it, and risk oiling up my dash). The car drives straight and true down the highway, and feels like a much younger car. It is a true pleasure to drive, doesn't burn oil, doesn't do anything it shouldn't. I drive her 3 or 4 days a week with complete confidence, and drive my Volvo the rest of the week. Exterior: The exterior is beautiful, with the exception of the small ding I show in the video and possibly in the pictures. This car is rust-free, inside and out, but on the front valence, it seems some water got caught below the front bumper and caused the edges of the front bottom spoiler to develop some rust. (See pictures of front of car - this part is replaceable, and not actually part of the body or chassis / frame, so to speak) I can supply more pictures of the undercarriage if you wish, but you can rest assured that this car has no rust on the chassis or body. It has been in Texas most of its life, and rust is something I check out tediously before I buy a car. The paint is nice, there is one spot on the roof, about 4 inch by 2 inch, where it seems like the clearcoat is faded. I can't tell why, the paint is really quite nice everywhere else, and it has plenty of life left. I was told, and shown a reciept that the paint was done back in 2006. There is also a small chip on the windshield, but the funny thing is, you can't feel it from the outside or the inside. It's like a section was taken out of the middle. It's quite small, and I'm sure a competent windshield repair shop can fix it. It is the type that will not spread, and it is not a crack. It is a chip. A/C and Climate: This car never had A/C. It wasn't installed from the factory. I like this better, because it means that the engine hasn't been overloaded with trying to run A/C compressor all its life. Typically, I find that cars without A/C have stronger motors than ones with A/C. The heater works excellently and gets you warm and toasty. Other: The odometer has recently stopped working. I would extimate 3,000 or 4,000 miles have been put on her since then. I didn't remove the cluster to fix it, because of the oil line that goes to the oil gauge. I love doing my own work on cars, but figured someone more competent in these vehicles should attempt this. I never got around to it, because it simply didn't matter to me. I know the car has low miles and that's all that mattered. The car comes with a JVC el-Chameleon CD player, which works just like it should. The sunroof works flawlessly, all windows go up and down like they should, all interior and exterior lights come on, there are no burnt lights behind the dash, and there are no warning lights on. Title, stickers, tags: The title is a good, blue title, and ready to be transfered to you. The car is current regarding inspection and registration. I will require a $500 cash deposit, sent to paypal, within 12 hours of auction close, and the remainder within 3 days, in cash, or a cashier's check that I can clear at a local bank on the day of pickup. If you need other arrangements, please contact me first. Please honor your bid, I have put a lot of time into this ad, and for someone to just back out is very unfair. Please let me know your intentions if you have zero feedback, or I may cancel your bids. I'm sorry, I've just had bad experiences in the past with bidders with zero or negative feedback. Good luck bidding, I know you will love this car just as much as I. I will sorely miss her. It's almost like this car was built for me. The black and grey checkered interior just screams retro, and the cleanliness and style speaks volumes about Mercedes Benz in the 70s. Combine this with good fuel economy and roadworthiness, and you have a true champion of a car. You can contact me at (512) 588-3492. Pictures: Please click to enlarge.
