To elevate the functional American pick-up truck into the realms of: high art, refined American industrial design, and major automotive show caliber winners. To use the platform of the Ford F 250 Ranger to showcase the best American aftermarket performance parts, engine technology, and utilitarian accessories To foster an appreciation for the fully custom coach built work truck/4x4 by exhibiting the design, fabrication, and technical talents of Joe Letourneau and his team at East Coast Autoworks. Inspiration: In the history of the motorcar, the American Pick-Up truck is one of the greatest contributions to the automotive design cannon. Like Jazz, western movies, and rock and roll it is an art form which is uniquely American. The 1979 Ford F 250 represents one of the great examples of the American Pick-up throughout its evolution. However, like many factory built cars of its day there were deficiencies and short comings. Mass production, low cost, poor quality, and aesthetic gimmickry prevail as the goals and end result of our society’s consumer and automotive product offerings. Yet there still exists a thriving and growing market niche of automotive parts and accessories designed and built in the tradition of America’s great industrial designers, craftsman, and manufacturers. The inspiration for this build was to showcase those products, on a platform as culturally, artistically, and functionally significant as the 1979 Ford F 250. Additionally, this allowed us to present a considered blend of cutting edge performance parts and accessories along with refined and improved legacy technology. The Design Case: The majority of custom pick-up truck builds that exist today are either: exact restorations to original factory specs, 1950’s slammed or hot rod style street conversions, or contemporary domestic or import trucks comprising an amalgam of bolt-on aftermarket kits, parts, and accessories. Builds from the 1970’s era are typically of average quality where the major focus is on the off road or mudding prowess or its “stance on main street” The goal from a design/concept standpoint was to complete a build that melds the high quality and extreme attention detail found in major auto show winners in the resto mod category with the high performance characteristics found in top of the line custom offroad trucks and utilitarian work vehicles. Functionality: lifted, shocks, dump bed, tires, significant wheels, winches, seats, air compressor, engine, sound deadening, e lockers in front and rear, dual steering stabilizer-ideal for farm work, cruising, offroading Style-clean period correct gauges, engine turned aluminum al la the spirit of saint louis, bumpers, paint choice along with black to create military industrial theme, nickel plating on hardware, squared off masculine outsized American style as found on the 79 F 250, significant engine power with the distinct American V8 high horsepower sound and exhaust note.
