Vehicle Detail
This 1959 Edsel Corsair Convertible is from the collection of the AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) Museum in Hershey, Pennsylvania, a non-profit Museum dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of transportation history. The car was generously donated to the Museum several years ago and is now being offered for sale to highest bidder with a reasonable opening bid and no reserve. All proceeds benefit the Museum. The car is not for sale outside of eBay and the auction will not be ended early. This is a complete, running car that can be used as is or fully restored. While the Edsel is not in museum exhibition condition, it is worthy of a collector’s attention. It is also rare – 1 of 1,343 produced, according to the Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975. This vehicle will make an excellent driver or restoration candidate and is one that the Museum would consider keeping if we had the storage space and financial resources to do so. The Edesl’s Vehicle Identification Number is: B9UR723638, which decodes as follows. B = 332 cid V8 9 = 1959 year of manufacture U = Louisville, Kentucky Plant R = Model Number 76E, Convertible, 6-Passenger Like any vehicle, this Edsel has its good and bad points. We’ll start with the good ones first! The car is complete and it runs well. The odometer reads 54,926 miles, which may be actual. After three years of indoor storage, we installed a battery and the car started right up. With some fresh gas, the car was driven around the Museum complex with no issues. It idles smoothly, shifts as it should and stops with no problems. It seems to be in fine overall mechanical condition. We know the car was registered as an Antique Vehicle in the State of Pennsylvania by its donor and was driven seasonally. Our shop volunteers also checked over the electrical system and found the lights, signals and power top to be functional. The only thing they found to be non-operable were the radio and the “park” function on the pushbutton transmission. The car also comes with a second set of Edsel wheel covers shown in the accompanying photographs. The biggest negative issues concerning this car are the lower edges of the body. Previous repair work has been done to the fenders and quarter-panels and there is rust, bubbling and small holes visible in a variety of locations. A previous owner also had sheet metal panels cut, bent and applied to the rocker panels to cover rust damage. There will need to be some panel replacement done prior to painting this vehicle. Despite the lower body panel rust, the remainder of the car, including the frame and floors is in good condition. We have tried to show the Edsel’s overall condition, top and bottom, inside and out with the listing’s photographs. Interested parties are encouraged to call or email with questions or come in person or through a representative for a first-hand inspection. Aside from the body issues, the top is missing its rear window. The interior is complete and generally usable as it. There is normal wear and tear to most components and the dash is cracked near the speaker. There is a small crack on the passenger’s side window glass. The car’s chrome and trim is pitted and faded and will need to be replated or replaced to upgrade it from driver condition. This vehicle is offered as is, where is, with no warranty expressed or implied. It has a valid Pennsylvania title which will be transferred to the new owner upon successful completion of the transaction. Please note that we discovered that on the title the car is listed as a “1958 Edsel” rather than a 1959. This is a mistake that was not corrected by the previous owner or by the Museum when filing for our own title. The VIN and all other information is correct and the title can easily be corrected by the new owner. Shipping and transportation of the Edsel will be the responsibility of the new owner. We will gladly work with you or the shipper/transporter of your choice to coordinate the move. The new owner will have two weeks from the completion of the auction to pick up the vehicle unless other arrangements are made in advance. The car is located at the AACA Museum, 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, PA 17033. Payment may be in the form of cash, money order, cashier’s check or PayPal (with all fees paid by the purchaser). Thank you for your interest in our Edsel Convertible and this auction. Interested parties are encouraged to email or call with questions, to request additional photographs or schedule a personal inspection. You may contact us through the “ask the seller a question” link on this page or by calling Jeffrey Bliemeister, Museum Curator, at 717-566-7100 ext. 104. All proceeds from this sale benefit the AACA Museum, a 501 (C) 3 non-profit educational institution.
