Vehicle Detail

This auction is for a very low mileage 1982 Volvo 242 turbo, with M46 manual transmission (4-speed + overdrive) and sunroof. Mechanically sound, cosmetically challenged. Since acquiring this vehicle in 2008, we have performed the following upgrades: Brand new engine wiring harness from Dave Barton, new ball joints and tie rod ends, new Bilstein touring front struts, new strut mounts, IPD polyurethane sway bar bushings. A/C converted to R-134a, system blown out with compressed air, all O-rings replaced, new expansion valve, new receiver dryer. No unusual noise from blower fan. New spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. New lower injector seals. Fuel tank removed from vehicle and steam cleaned, new in-tank fuel pump and filter sock installed. Resoldered fuel pump relay and overdrive relay. New timing belt, alternator belts, a/c compressor belt and p/s pump belt. New "tropical" fan clutch, to help deal with the Florida heat. Other parts replaced with known good parts from an '85 245 turbo include main fuel pump, steering rack, rear shocks, rebuilt alternator, newer cat-back exhaust system. The interior is pretty decent; there are no rips or tears in the upholstery. The seats are very comfortable with no sagging. Both front seats recline and fold with no issues. The plastic seat belt covers and defrost vents on the back deck were deteriorated and have been replaced with newer parts. Both of the map pockets on the doors are intact. Plastic floor trays for the front are included. All of the instruments and gauges work. Both power mirrors work. The manual sunroof opens and closes with no binding. A Jensen AM/FM/CD player with remote was installed and works fine. The dashboard is cracked, but there is a nice custom-fitted fabric cover for it. The original owner's manual is also included. We have been using this vehicle as a daily driver for about a year. It starts right up every time and handles fine. The suspension and brakes have a good firm feel. Clutch engages without chattering. Overdrive engages easily with no issues. The original 6X15J Virgo wheels with center caps are included (several of the photos show the wheels without center caps, but I found a set and they are included). The tires are T-rated 195/60-15s with plenty of tread, Sigmas on the front and Fate-Os on the rear. Cosmetically, the vehicle seriously needs a paint job. The plastic/rubber belt line trim is deteriorated and cracking, however I will include some metal belt line trim removed from a 1979 242GT which can be used to replace it. There is some surface rust on the sunroof, but no other significant areas of rust on the car. Additional photos of the worst spots are here: http://www.jpegbay.com/gallery/000591529-1982-Volvo-240-GLT.html#I2 The floors are especially solid as you can see in the photos. A brand new windshield was just recently installed. The sunroof does not leak. All the lights work and all the lenses are solid. The car is shown with black painted grille and headlight surrounds, but I have the originals and can swap them back in if you don't like the "blackout" look. Several bidders contacted me and asked if the vehicle could be driven to New York, or Texas, or wherever. I see no reason why not, but you have to be realistic and keep in mind that this is a 28 year old vehicle, regardless of the low mileage. If I were taking this vehicle or any vehicle of this age on a long trip, I would bring along a good tool kit, a box of spare parts and a shop manual. Another bidder asked if this would make a good, safe and reliable "first car" for a teenager. With respect to safety, this was probably the safest car you could buy 28 years ago. Automotive technology has come a long way since then. This car has no air bags, just three-point seatbelts and a tank-like body. And unless the teenager in question likes to mess around with cars and tools and has some experience with Bosch K-jet fuel injection systems, it's probably not an appropriate car for them. Clear Florida title in my name. The car is being sold "as-is" with no warranty expressed or implied. We can meet you at the Tampa or St. Pete/Clearwater airports, Tampa Amtrak station, or Tampa or Clearwater Greyhound bus station. A $500 deposit via Pay Pal is required within 48 hours after the auction ends, and payment of the balance must be made within 5 days of the end of the auction by certified check, money order or cash in person. I will accept your personal check, but it must clear my bank before the title is signed over and the vehicle can be released. I will be out of town from July 24 until August 8, so if the vehicle is not picked up by July 23, it will have to wait until I get back on August 8.
