My loss, your gain. Unfortunately, my van's engine stalled and I had it towed to the shop. My mechanic has told be I have a burnt valve and the engine should be rebuilt. The engine does turn over and he has adjusted the valves a few time but it quickly falls out of adjustment. Please keep in mind you will need to tow the van from Brooklyn, NY when purchased until the burnt valve can be addressed. I would love to spend the time fixing this van, but do not have the space to work on this project. Thank you for your interest in this very fun and unique ‘73 VW Bus. It was purchased from an individual in Georgia in 2008. The vehicle is registered in Washington State (my home). I bought this vehicle as a daily driver to transport my growing family around during our weekend adventures to the beaches and in the mountains for hiking. We hope to pass her on to someone who will be able to use her more. As you have noticed there are blemishes on the body. The undercarriage appears only to have superficial rust (I’m sure vehicle in Georgia are not seeing much salt due to the mild winters further south). There are approximately 70,000 miles on the odometer. It is not the original engine, about a 2000 cc engine with a Weber Carburetor. Before recent engine trouble the van easily cruised at 70 mph on the highways. Zero issues with the automatic transmission. At purchase, the engine was hard starting so I had a new starter, hot wire ignition relay, battery, and battery cable installed. I have safely transported my newborn son (now 2 years old) around safely in his car seat many times. Since ownership I have started replacing worn and tired items on the bus. Being 36 year-old air-cooled (no radiator) Volkswagen, she runs much better when warmed up (especially in freezing/sub-zero temperatures). I would not suggest you buy this van if you do not like people. There has not been one day since my ownership that I do not have people waving, taking pictures, sharing their ‘days-of-glory’ stories, and dozens offers to buy the bus. I was even approached to use the Van in a movie production. In ending, I hope we can find someone who will be able to enjoy her as much as we do. I purchased the van for $5500 and have easily spent $4,000 in repairs and new parts since ownership. The engine starts and will run roughly but then will die after awhile. The valve should really be addressed through an engine rebuild. • Keys to outdoor locks missing • Cosmetic: Interior Panels to be replaced • Cosmetic: Head liner to be replaced • Blinkers not working (wiring short) • Horn not working • Windshield Wiper fluid system not working (wipers work) • Seatbelts in back seats need installed (seatbelts were not issued in 73’) I have installed a lap belt for a car seat.
