Vehicle Detail

You are looking at a very original black plate California British Racing Green, steel dash MGB Roadster with the desirable overdrive and wire wheel option. It’s a great “driver quality” MGB that is well sorted and has been maintained meticulously. I’m listing the MGB for a friend from Seattle that moved and has reduced garage space. I’ve been storing the car and have no financial involvement in the transaction. We looked at many disappointing early MGB’s before finding this great little survivor. It’s probably the best driving MGB I’ve ever experienced. My friend has decided to let it go and I’ve been deliberating buying it but already have too many cars! HISTORY AND EQUIPMENT: The MGB was sold new in 1966 at British Motors in Palo Alto, California. The original owner used the B seasonally and stored the car during the winter months until it was sold in 1985. The second owner (a very knowledgeable and skilled car guy) purchased the MG in completely original condition and owned the car for the next 17 years. The second owner did cosmetics in 1987 and consistently maintained and refurbished the car mechanically during his ownership. A neighbor of the second owner repeatedly attempted to buy the MGB over the years and was offered the B in 2002 after the purchase of an E-Type. The MGB retired in Oregon with the third owner in 2007. My friend is the fourth owner and purchased the car in 2009. I was along for the 2009 purchase and have spoken at length with the second owner who resides in California. The MG’s serial number is GHN3L95177 and the body number is MGB086312. BODY, PAINT & TRIM: The car is extremely solid and has never sustained any collision damage or rust repair. Every panel on the car is original including the alloy hood. When the second owner purchased the B in 1985 it still had 100% of the factory BRG paint and a perfect undamaged body. The B had an exterior repaint in 1987. The fenders have never been off and it has a beautiful original untouched engine compartment. California and Oregon don’t use road salt which explains the exceptional condition of the body. There are some very minor small bubbles in both rear doglegs and both lower fenders (pictured) where dust settles on the inside of the panel and holds moisture. If the car were stripped to bare metal the bubbles would result in some minor pinholes. The rocker panels are perfect and rust-free. The original floors are also in great shape as is the trunk floor. I can see some very minor surface rust on the floors and a few pin holes in the driver’s side floor you can see when the car is on a lift. The driver door has a small stress crack near the wing window, a common problem caused by people using the wing window to shut the door. The driver door also has multiple chips that appear to have occurred from the door being opened into something repeatedly where the car was parked. The body is virtually perfect other than these flaws and amazing considering 44 years of consistent use. The paint has rock chips and dings that have occurred over the past 23 years. The most noticeable ding is on the driver’s quarter panel (pictured) near the taillight but is small and hard to see in the photo. Overall, the paint presents well but has multiple flaws under close inspection and wasn’t stripped when the car was painted in the 80’s. Some chrome was replaced in 1987 but the majority of the trim is original. There are flaws in the trim under close inspection but overall the trim is in nice shape. The car would make a great driver the way it is or would be a spectacular basis for a restoration down the road (if you choose to go that route). INTERIOR: The B had the carpets and panels replaced when the car was repainted in 1987. The seats had the original leather covers replaced with vinyl covers at some point but are presentable and very comfortable. The steel dash is completely original and has never been chopped up or modified for an aftermarket radio. The gauges are original and in beautiful condition; the dash has some paint flaws and patina from the past 44 years of use. The steering wheel is perfect and the horn button is showing some age related patina. The dash pad has a few minor flaws. The top is in good shape and serviceable but the windows have some minor haziness, the tonneau cover and top boot I believe are the factory originals. The boot is mint and the tonneau is nice but has 2 small tears. Overall the interior presents well and has lots of patina! MECHANICAL: The motor was completely rebuilt in 1998 including new SU carburetors. The engine tag is missing due to the block being hot tanked but is believed to be the original engine for the B. The transmission was replaced with a series 2 (68-74) full syncro transmission at the same time and shifts beautifully, the overdrive functions properly. Virtually everything mechanical was redone by the second owner over his 17 years of ownership. He operated in a "no expense spared" fashion and the car has been thoroughly rebuilt including cooling system, suspension bushings, springs, brakes, rebuilt wheels with Avon Tires etc, etc. There is very minor oil seepage when the car is parked. Overall, the car has been extensively maintained, serviced and runs and drives beautifully. MISCELLANOUS: The MGB temperature gauge failed and will need to be rebuilt, the car runs perfectly cool and it’s a problem with the gauge. The speedometer works properly but the odometer doesn’t. It was sent out twice by the second owner and failed both times he got frustrated and just lived with it. The heater core recently started dripping and I installed a bypass loop so it can be driven. The heater core will need to be replaced or rebuilt before it gets cold, (the heat functioned properly prior to the drip). The horn, turn signals and lights all function properly. The B comes with a top, top assembly, top storage bag, tonneau cover, boot cover, boot steel cross bar assembly and bag, jack and bag, knock off hammer, factory tire block and the original owner’s handbook (that has lots of patina). I’ve never seen a few of these items before and I’ve owned quite a few MGB’s! I’m a sports car nut and will attempt to answer any questions you may have. I can be reached at 503-310-6171(Cameron). The vehicle is available to be viewed, I also have additional pictures, please provide me your email address and what you’d like to see. The successful bidder will be making payment in the form of a wire transfer to the owner of the MGB directly at which time I will release the car. Paypal deposit in the amount of $200 is due with-in 48 hours; the balance is due with-in 7 days of the auction closing and the car is to be picked up with-in 15 days. The owner holds a clear Washington State title in his name and the car has current Washington registration. We will assist in international shipping. This is a NO RESERVE auction and we do not have a “buy it now” price; the MGB will be sold to high bidder at the conclusion of the auction. Good Luck! On Jul-02-10 at 21:43:12 PDT, seller added the following information: There's a 6 inch vertical crack in the windscreen near the passenger side top latch. It's hard to see and I forgot to mention it in my original description. The MGB also comes with the factory valve cover. IF YOU HAVE ZERO FEEDBACK BUT ARE SERIOUS ABOUT BIDDING ON THE MG PLEASE CONTACT ME PRIOR TO BIDDING OR I WILL CANCEL YOUR BID. On Jul-06-10 at 20:11:57 PDT, seller added the following information: I'll be out of town until Saturday October 10th on vacation and the transaction will need to completed after that time. Unfortunately I have no AT&T coverage at our camping location but will be traveling to Crater Lake Wednesday July 7th and will be able to return any calls at that time. Thanks
