BEAUTIFUL 1969 MATCHING # 396, CALIFORNIA BLACK PLATE CHEVELLE SS WITH FACTORY A/C READY TO SHOW OR GO! I will start off by saying that this is not a car that I was "told" was matching #, or one I "think" is a true SS.....IT IS A MATCHING # TRUE SS 1969 CHEVELLE that spent its entire life in California and has a top quality paint job on a laser straight body in the original color code 72 Monaco Orange. Please do not email me telling me why you think this car is not a true SS as you will be wrong and those of you who are Chevelle enthusiasts know what I mean. Although I am far from an expert, I know enough to know what this car is. I have been fortunate enough to own 3 Monaco 1969 SS Chevelles in the last few years and I can say that other one that was a frame off restoration this one stands above the others. Aside from how original and authentic it is it is also a muscle car you can get in and drive and enjoy. Take it to a cruise in or bring home a trophy from a local show if that's what you enjoy. But most important in this market, you will know you have the real deal, a true Matching # SS car in one of the most sought after colors. I will do my best to honestly describe all that I know about this awesome ride and will include enough pics to clearly show you the quality of car you are looking at and a video to also help you hear how sweet it sounds. If you have been looking for a sweet Matching # '69 Chevelle SS this may be the one!! I recently sold the 70 Chevelle SS convertible in the one of the pictures below after having it on Ebay for just one day. This 69 is the same quality of car and the next owner is going to get one of the great ones. I always try to buy cars from individuals who have owned them and enjoyed them for many years. This is definitely one of those great cars. The previous owner bought this SS in 1990 so he owned it for about 20 years. Amazingly when he bought it the car was painted blue with silver stripes. It was rust free but needed to be restored. He decided to have the car stripped to the bare metal and I have a great group of pictures documenting the restoration. As he had it stripped they began finding Orange under the blue paint at which point he checked the color code on the trim tag and found the color code 72, Monaco Orange. Many of you probably know that this was one of 2 color codes that they only produced in SS Chevelles which in and of itself is enough to verify to most people that it began life as a true SS. Of course at that point he decide to take the car back to its original color and his body man had one of the best bodies to start out with as this car spent its entire life in Central CA and was a Z code CA production car. From the restoration pictures it appears this car still has all of its original body panels and they are super, super straight! This work was done in 1995...yes, 15 years ago! However, believe me, the paint shines like it is showroom new! There is no orange peel or trash in this paint job and his receipts show there were 7 coats of clear applied. Receipts and pictures show this car was disassembled and de-trimmed before paint and many, many hours were spent making sure it was done right. The body is gorgeous, no bubbles or cracks....truly a top quality paint job. The gentleman owned this car and a 73 Corvette that he was the original owner of and had decided it was time to part with both cars. He was passionate about the car and it shows! The only thing I did to the body when I got the car was to have the SS stripe applied by a guy who does top quality work and laid it out as straight as the body. The previous owner could never decide if he wanted the stripe and left it off. He also couldn't decide if he wanted the chrome moldings around the wheel wells but included them and I had them put on. Is the body perfect? No, but only a few tiny chips down along the drivers side rocker area below the door keep me from saying it is. The only other minor item on the body the next owner can address is the chrome trim that runs along the drip rails. For some reason one piece was installed on the driver side but for whatever reason the other pieces were not added. I do not have them but they can be bought fairly cheap. I was going to remove the one piece but did not want to damage the paint removing it. You may not even notice it and could leave it as is. All of the other chrome trim and weather stripping is excellent original or repalced and in great shape. All of the glass is in great shape and windows roll up and down nicely. I have to rate the paint and body on this car a strong 9 out of 10! The interior is also in great condition and is a mix of some original and some new. It appears that the front seats and door panels were replaced as they look to be just in slightly better condition then the original back seat. Dash pad and headliner look are in excellent original condition. One change made to the interior is the steering column. This is an original bucket seat console shift automatic car but the previous owner decided it was a little tough getting in and out with the standard steering column and he had a Tilt steering column from another 69 Chevelle installed instead with the sport wheel. This column came out of a column shift car. I do have the original column and original steering wheel if you wanted to put it back to original, however, the tilt wheel is a nice option to have. The current steering wheel is fading in spots but a simple dye job could correct this inexpensively. The carpet is in great shape but unfortunately someone cut it too much around the drivers side of the console so you may want to put in new carpet if that bothers you. Again, an inexpensive correction if desired. The original radio is missing an the hole is empty and uncut. Either a stock stereo or aftermarket one can easily be added. Last item is the passenger side front seat belt cover is missing which again is an easy , inexpensive item to replace. Other then these small items the interior looks great and matches the originality of the car. I added a very nice set of high quality matching 396 SS floor mats in black with Monaco Orange embroidery to compliment the colors. All of the gauges and lights and appear to be working correctly. Overall this interior is in great shape with only a few details needing to be addressed. When I bought the car the gentleman I got it from assured me it was the matching # 396 motor and he emailed me the #'s that he said were on the engine that he wrote down in 1995 when the car was restored. I asked him if he could see the #'s still on the pad on the engine block but he said they were painted over and not easy to read. I had a good feeling from what he was telling me and bought the car believing for sure it was matching #. But, in fairness to the next owner I realized it is a crucial piece of information to verify before representing it to be matching #'s. So, last week I took some paint thinner and the edge of a screw driver and removed the paint front he pad with the #'s on it. Of course I was delighted to find what I had believed to be true....the #'s on the pad match the Vin #'s and this is indeed the original 396/325hp motor the car left the factory with. It was hard to photograph but I am including the best pic I could take and you should be able to read the JK 79Z331124 digits which clearly match the vin #. Previous owner told me the motor ran strong when he got it but he did a mild rebuild with cam, lifters, valve springs, and a few other new components. This car is also believed to have just 112,500 original miles and very few miles were put on the car after the restoration was done in 1995. I believe it is the original carburetor that was rebuilt. In fact all of the mechanical components appear to have been rebuilt or replaced close to the time of restoration. I am not positive if the automatic transmission is the original but I am including a picture of the tag for you to decode. The transmission was also rebuilt and this car shifts smooth and strong! Power steering is awesome and power front disc brakes work great. F41 Suspension and 12 bolt rear round out the factory set up on this highly original car. Front end is tight and this car glides along the road and hugs turns nicely. The Factory A/c is also a great option and all components are in place and it blows but need to be charged to be cold. This car runs out very strong and I would say it is very stock and is a 325hp 396 motor. Exhaust was redone and has the muscle car lope and rumble you would expect from such a sweet stock looking SS. You should be able to hear it in the one walk around video I did below. One of the great attributes of a California 60's muscle car is how rust free they usually are and this one is no exception. The floor pans and trunk pan are rock solid with no issues. The floors are all original and super clean and could easily be detailed to look as nice as the paint and body if desired. The trunk was nicely detailed out and again is rock solid with no signs of any metal work done. It appears that the rear quarter panels are all original as is the rest of the car. There is an extra SS wheel in the trunk and the car rides on the original 14" SS wheels wrapped in nice BFG TA radial tires. I think this about covers it all and hopefully the pictures and videos will give you a great sense of how great this car is. It is not a concourse, frame off restoration but it is truly on e of the great unmolested original SS cars that you will proud to own and get a thrill out of driving while also making one of the best investments in the classic car hobby.
